Import Ammo from Europe?

Reading around the internet, it seems that Europeans are not going through an ammo supply crisis. Even .22lr are widely available. I have some friends over there, and wonder if anyone has ever imported ammo from Europe. Considering how hard it seems to export ammo from the USA, is this a viable option? I ask because I have no clue what it would take to do this.

Canada actually has some fairly "no non-sense" laws regarding the importing of ammunition.

In general you can (personally) import up to 5000 round of "non-restricted" ammunition without any kind of permit at all.

Mostly you need to find a source that has no issue "exporting" ammo to Canada.

Some will be like the US (require expensive permits), others may require you to get a permit on this end as well as their end.

But if you can find a country that will ship without red tape, there isn't much issue receiving it on this end.

However, by the time you pay all the shipping (and possibly VAT taxes on the other end plus currency conversion) you might find it to be cost prohibitive, but certainly, not impossible.

They may not have a 22lr shortage but what brands of 22lr do they shoot? The premium European target/match 22lr ammo hasn't been that difficult to find in Canada but you're looking at $60-80/brick as a starting point for most of it. I picked up 1000rnds of RWS (German) this past week to top off my stash and it was $167 after tax. That's a normal price, not gouging, for premium European ammo. Hirsch Precision has a pile of SK and Lapua 22lr in stock right now. They are both part of the Nammo group (Norwegian/Finnish) but are made in Germany and Finland respectively. Of course it's likewise $64+ per brick since it's premium target ammo. That's a perfectly reasonable, non-gouging price for this kind of ammo.

I don't know how much of the bulk US made stuff they use in Europe.

The market is very different in Europe. very low volumes compared to here. And they pay higher prices. Any manufacturer outside of embargoed countries is shipping as much as they can in to the US market.

Both Lapua and SK .22 is made exclusively in Germany. Lapua GmbH built a new, high-tech plant for the new Lapua .22 product.

Peter

Europeans are not going through an ammo supply crisis because the demand is far lower. Private firearm ownership there is a great deal less than it is here.
Have a look at what England says. Add the W's. .gov.uk/firearms-and-export-control-forms
It's up to 5000 round of "non-restricted" ammunition without paying duties not permits. However, the whole issue is not about importing. It's about exporting from Europe. European Union country laws require export permits and end user certificates for anything firearm related.
