Hey there,

I am just wondering if anyone knows what the cost is to import boots from the US? I am looking at a pair made by "Drew's boots", but if they are going to cost me $300, plus american taxes, plus canadian taxes, plus import fees, and cost me close to $500 by then, I would prefer to buy Canadian in that case.

Has anyone on this site done this before, and can give a ball-park figure? Thanks very much -Cameron

It'll cost you GST and a $5.00 if they are mailed through U.S. postal service......if they are sent UPS which some companies will only do, prepare to bend over. Expect about $60 on a $300 order for brokerage and such from the men in brown.

You won't pay US taxes. Just $5 and GST, PST if not going to a business name. Make sure you insist it be shipped by mail, not UPS, fedex, etc or you will pay large handling fees.

It does if it goes by UPS, hence the large fees.

I think I explained that above but I guess it bears repeating.....my point was, you don't need to broker it yourself if it's shipped US Post as no broker is required and you don't have the option of brokering it yourself if it's shipped UPS as they automatically do it.

You can choose to broker if it comes via UPS. I do it all the time. Hence 4Runnerdude's comment

On personal items?

UPS does offer a service with lower or no brokerage charges but I haven't had much luck trying to educate any U.S. retailers that do little business in Canada on how to use it. As he is ordering a set of boots off the internet from a company that rarely ships to Canada, I doubt he'd have much luck either. If they ship it regular UPS which I guarantee they will regarless of how many times you ask not to, he'll end up paying brokerage with no option to do it himself. Much easier to ask for US Postal shipping. Pay your 5 bucks and GST and away you go.

Thanks very much for the replies everyone. They have been very helpful with regards to figuring out my total cost.

The boots would be coming from Idaho, for what it's worth.

Cheers -Cameron

As has been posted.....GST and a small fee is shipped USPS is all thats needed......

If they are American made....then NAFTA makes em duty free....

Made overseas and you'll look at around 19-21% duty....

A year, or so, ago, I had a part for my quad come from southern California. It came Fedx and I was really happy with it. The company supplying the part gave me all charges on the phone, and I paid ahead of time to have it delivered. Shipping was something like twenty dollars.
Phoned the order on Wednesday afternoon and Friday afternoon Fedx rang my door bell!
Also, have never seen such good tracking service. Everytime I looked it was a little closer.

I've had too much trouble with fitting to buy clothing or boots online again.

I wear sz 10 normally. I have a pair of sz 10 Danners (Ebay) that I can only wear light socks in as they are too small and another pair of sz 10 Brownings that are a tad too big. Just the other day I bought a new pair of composite work boots and had to go to sz 10.5 to get the proper fit.

Clothing and footwear manufacturers would do well to standardize the sizes as it would help sell alot more of their goods online if the consumer knew exactly what they were going to get size wise before buying.
