Importing pinned mags from the us.

I think AR mags can't be exported fom the us without paperwork (or maybe not at all), due to them being for "military assault weapons" or somerthing along those lines....can someone who knows the details chime in? I would assumr ak style mags would fall into the same category, but i dunno.

yup you need us export permits

and canadian customs makes it own ruels with pinned mags and often in the past have NOT accepted pop rivits as good enough

I researched this question when I was trying to get some G43 magazines from Numrich. As far as I could tell, and there were three or four directly related documents, the answer is yes and no.

Yes, you can import just about anything (like the other guys have posted), but CBSA doesn't have the technical knowledge to measure 1,3,5 or 15 round capacity. They are busy people and pass anything remotely controversial to the RCMP Forensics labs. They are busy too, and would prefer to destroy shady looking imports than make a mistake.

So to avoid recklessly endangering the Canadian public (smirk and wink), CBSA's regulations will permit imported high capacity magazines that have been welded to a zero capacity. No pins, bolts or other attempts. Welded shut.

this "topic comes up about as much as 'WHAT DO I NEED TO START RELOADING"- a little research wouldn't hurt-now watch the next question will be"can i import the parts - seperately?

Huh this is wierd. How exactly do retailers import the mags then?

As I understand it, some dealers are allowed to import the full capacity mags and then have them pinned before resale. Their business firearms licence would specifically include permission to do this. Dealers have to specifically ask for this permission, as it is not normally given when a dealer is issued a licence. At least, I think that's how it works.

Importing ANY mags now requires the MANUFACTURER of said mags to be DDTC registered with the Dept of State, if they are, and many are not, then the exporter may apply for an export permit, which requires the person asking for the mags to provide the US exporter with a Cdn import certificate, end user ceryicate and US DOS form DSP83. The mags must meet Cdn standards so any mag other than rimfire, with a capacity greater than proscibed by CFC, mus be pinned or permanently blocked PRIOR to coming into Canada.

As someone else pointed out CBSA policy places the onus on the importer to prove they are legal in Canada or forfeit them. Many importers do not have access to all the classified documents that the CBSA must recognize.

Just another case of government employees (civil servants LOL) in power enforcing laws as they please, many know little about what the laws REALLY say and like to make seizures to gain points.
