Importing Primers

There is a LRP shortage in Canada, but there are plenty of primers out there in the world. Could we not solve or alleviate this problem with importation? Has anyone looked into the process and cost?

The government permits 5000 primers to be imported for personal use. If that's not economical because of shipping reasons, then we could achieve economies of scale by arranging a bulk purchase through an entity with a licence. I have to imagine there would be enough demand to do that. I fully recognise this might be more complicated or involved or expensive than I'm understanding, but it's also possible in my mind that no one has broached the topic of organising something.

Just my 2 cents, but the demand for primers of any type is pretty big these days everywhere in the world. Lots of conflicts require lots of ammo.
Yes there are plenty of primers available from different countries that theoretically could be imported into Canada, but why would any distributor want to go through the hassle with a small time country like Canada? In the grand scheme of things we just don't matter that much.

Russian sanctions are part of the problem, TULA and Wolf were big sellers in the US and domestic can't keep up.
CCI/Federal/Remington was just purchased by a Czech firm so there is a transition going on there as well.
S&B might be a source from Europe...

Your post caused at least 5 issues to pop up for me.
1. How do you know that LRP are "plentiful" out in the world - where?
2. Are all LRP equivalent to each other, no matter the source or brand?
3. Canada may set import limits for individuals, but what about export limits from originating countries?
4. Why has not an entrepreneur with a couple hundred thousand spare bucks, not done so already - is likely a LOT of money to be made.
5. You will need to have people put up their money, not just their words, to make it happen

Dude, do you think you could arrange (X) number of members on CGN to ETF/EMT funds in the amount of 250K for this venture ?
2 transactions and 21 posts over 8 years for a business venture does not instill much confidence in me and I will not speak for the remainder of CGN members.
The entire Canadian market share of firearms and various sundries is less than any state in America you care to mention.
I used to buy components from across the line years ago, but 911 and a few other world events changed all of that, governments changed their laws that restrict alien visitors on what they can and can not do in America as an example.
As for the World market (supply), the logistics while not insurmountable the first order of business would be contacts and lots and lots of cash.

Hey, thanks for your reply.

I never intended to put myself forward as an intermediary or importer on behalf of others.

When I have seen LRPs for sale, they were $200, the primers on my bench have tags of $35 and $47 a brick. I'm guessing we will see $100 as a bargain and a new normal.

Introducing more supply would help drive prices down.

I looked into it, and my understanding is that a licence to import would cost about $192. That would be added to the semi-fixed cost of shipping (perhaps another couple hundred dollars). LGS and other importers are already able to store primers and other hazardous goods. I just figure that a bulk order of sufficient size would be able to generate enough economies of scale to make it worthwhile.

Just gotta love people who pose these kinds of questions, without ever considering that if such a thing was possible, someone would already be doing it. :HR:

There are loads of importers and retailers with more than enough funds to do what you have suggested but all of them are too dumb to think of it and you have simply outsmarted the entire CDN gun industry. :slap:

And on a more practical note, importing into Canada is not the problem. Exporting from the country of origin is the primary problem.

It isn’t a huge deal. A friend has talked to the proper people in the US gov’t and is jumping through the hoops to do this.
