Do red dot sights need to go through the same import process (from US into Canada) as other scopes do (import/export permits) or are they exempt because they do not magnify?

I just ordered one and had no problems what so ever. It was shipped from NewHampsire to Alberta.
I order gun parts quite a bit and have never had to have an import export permit. I just order whatever I know I can legaly own in Canada and have never run into a problem.

It was from Pauls guns (sksman) and he told me they have lots of Canadian business.

It did, in case you want to know...go through (and get opened) by customs and thay had no problems with it.

That business violated U.S. Export Laws....................

ALL firearms optics coming out of the U.S. Require U.S .Export permits, as does most firearm related gear.

Do a search here.............it has been mentioned over and over again that Canada Customs is NOT the problem. It is the U.S. where the problem and hassle lies.

That business risks being shutdown and being levied with some pretty large fines if the U.S .authorites catch him illegally exporting controlled goods out of the U.S.

IF you need more info, the U.S. Commerce Dept controls the export of Firearms Optics......................The U.S. State Dept may also get involved if the optics are Military Issue.......................

Once again, the CGN policy is that the import/export laws of both Canada AND the U.S. MUST be followed when posting on this site.

I think that the parts I ordered were exempt as some are under US laws...and the under 100 USD exemption applied also. I researched this and I cannot find anyone in Canada that says I could not do this...I called canada customs and I figured they would know import laws and regs better than me but they had no problem...seriously..The exporter from the US said they had all nessasary paperwork to fill my order.
Its good info to know as I want to abide by the law and will be more carefull in the future and apologize for my post as I just wanted to help someone out on here.

Skullboy,
Why don't you help me so I don't have to search too much....thats what you guys do best.....find me the site/publication/phone number that states EXACTLY the procedure, to the exact word, of what we can import, what is exempt and what needs permits.
I've been on lots of pages here and every link provided and can't seem to find what I or about 100 others on here are looking for in reguards to this topic.
Lets not be snippy with one another and sort this out.
I would but can't stand to spend too much time on the internet....too much shooting to do.

Sorry, but I don't have time to search out info for every member who feels that they do not have enough time to do it themselves........................I work shift work, have a family, volunteer to Moderate this site, and have to find time for my own shooting...............

I have posted the agencies that you should be contacting MANY times over the past couple of years.

The onus is on you to find out any releavent information, and whether what you are doing is legal or not.

Once again, Firearms Optics/sights are controlled by the U.S. Commerce Dept, and/or the U.S. Dept. of State.

You would be best to phone these Agencies yourself and get clarification on the U.S. Export Regulations.

Some of the Red Dot sights are Military issue and have further restrictions on them as opposed the cheaper/generic sights on the market.

Last I heard the Eo-Tech 553 series is not allowed to be exported out of the U.S. (However some made it into Canada before this was put in place)..........
