I've been a 1911 die hard fanboy for years, even if my early years with the Royal Westminster Regiment hooked me into the Browning HP love! :)

My business however steered me towards the Glocks and Sigs (what my clients seem to be issued) and I left the steel framed pistol love for years. Now I'm back when Colt introduced the Competition Model in 9mm last year (or was it this year of 2016?) . I had to break down and jump back into the SA 1911 family once again.

Usually I shoot the factory magazines or Mec-Gar magazines because they all seem to work for me. I just picked up a Tripp Research INC magazine, a 10 rounder. Here is their website: https://www.trippresearch dot com/content/about.html (note: the removed hotlink and "dot" replaced)

As I was shopping around for magazines, I encountered a dedicated magazine shop called: www.northernrepublicmagazine dot com
And they are in Canada. This magazine retails for $60 and I can understand why very serious competitors select this level of magazine. No messing around.

Here's my rig and holster while getting set up to shoot some Federal American Eagle 9mm 115 gr FMJ ball rounds through.

And then I laid out the pistol with each of the 3 brands that I have for this impression / testing sessions:

And then here is a closer look at the magazines:

Now here's a shot of my Colt Competition in 9mm.. I've never owned a REAL Colt pistol since I was raising teenagers in high school and now they have left the next and are both off the payroll.

Top to bottom: Factory Colt 9 rd, Mec-Gar 10 rd, Tripp Cobra 10 rd

I shot over 200 rounds through all these 3 brands of magazines and not a single FTF or problem. Everything works smoothly

While stuffing ammo into the magazine.... I felt / noticed that the steel wall is thicker with the Tripp Cobra magazine... have a look at this picture:

I wished I had a set of measuring callipers to confirm this. I will let you observe and see for yourself... Have a look at a closer view:

Three different followers, all work well. Hard to improve on this design...

Left to Right: Tripp Cobra, Mec-Gar, factory Colt

Here's one side of the magazines, from left to right: Colt Factory, Mec-Gar 10 rounder, Tripp Cobra

Anecdotal Observations:

* all the magazines worked well
* All the magazines drop free, what's interesting however, the Tripp Cobra magazine was super slick coming out of the mag well, noticeably slicker
* Love the 10 round magazines with the polymer base plate versus the advantage of secure magazine loading when pushing/slapping that baseplate deeper into the magazine well under stress

So do you need a Tripp Cobra magazine system? Darned if I know since only you know your game, your budget, your ego, your comfort zone, your reputation, the magazine maker's reputation, what your buds recommend and all that.

I will say something, this magazine is impressive after many years of shooting 9mm 1911's with Mec-Gar, Norinco factory brand, Wilson Combat, Metalform, and now Tripp Cobra.

All good learning. Hope this can help your game!

Cheers,

Tripp magazines have been good to me, last 3 years of pistol competition was using only their mags.
The sales rep was the one to help me find out why my competition 1911 wasn't feeding properly, and pointed me in the right direction (non-magazine related).
I am all for buying local, but when the dollar turns and if you wish to purchase 8-10 at a time, it's worth it ordering direct from their site, these mags pass customs.

Now Barney how about buying 5 more of these and having a go at IPSC?
