Improving Mini-14/30 Accuracy

its funny you should mention Brimstone i was just thinking about pulling the trigger out and sending it to them to have it done up.

yes, there is noticeable weight on the front end from the Accustrut as its a solid metal rod, which does make it a little off balance because the Hogue stock is so light.

Did your mini come with a wood stock? The hogue added weight over the factory synthetic for me...but worth it. Yeah was really happy with the trigger afterwards. Not quite as good of a deal right now with the exchange rate, but I think it's still worth it :)

ya mine came with the wood stock.
i got it 3 years ago (2012) from Frontier.
i just looked it up and i got it for $769.99 which is funny cause my co-worker just got the exact gun for $1000 that is a hell of an increase in price!

Is there any place that sells the gas bushings and the buffers and has stock. Have a 2015 model that's throwing brass way to far and try and prevent some metal on metal action.

Is there a good canadian gunsmith for trigger jobs? If it's in Canada, might get it bedded too.

a co worker of mine - his best friend had his mini 14 worked on by some fella out of Edmonton.
from what he says its a dream now to shoot all tuned up.

i havnt seen it myself but ill ask for some more info on it like what he had done and where he had it done at and of course if there are any pic's for us to look at!

i've spent a lot of time chasing the accuracy of my mini's..only to find the biggest results came from changes in ammunition.
v-max & accu-tips (50 & 55gr) gave the best results providing a surprising 5 round clover leaf group @50 meters in my 582 series.
hornady steel match also works very well & is far cheaper to shoot.
worst was 5.56 green tips & some 55gr psp from winchester.
they're a great carbine but...it is a carbine, not a target rifle.

Necro post... sort of

I've had a mini 14 sitting in my gun locker for quite some time, and for the love of the action: despite my hatred for ruger i decided to pickup a mini 30 as a bush hunting rifle.

The triggers suck.... 100% creeping 8lb BS. Makes it hard to gently squeeze a shot off.

I did a "yoda" triger mod, holy crap, its a nice light triger pull with very little take up on the first stage.

the hardest part is drilling and tapping for the triger stop set screw.

Nutnfancy has a video were hes at the gunsmith that came up with it, and he video tapes the process as its done to his rifle.

If you skip the triger stop... you can drop the triger pull in half with a honing stone, file/dremel and a pair of pliers.

Any feeding issues with surplus 7.62x39 steel case ammo? (TNP had some lite primer strikes on his vid).

I agree the trigger job is a must on these. Been debating for a while on getting a "30".

feeding issues with the ball and SP isn't an issue, you will get the odd light strike most of it will go on a second strike, or just eject and carry on.
Hornady SST's gave me more grief. I made a video with what you can expect out of a mini 30

to Accustrut or not to Accustrut - that is the Mini 14 question!.....

i had wanted to see a decrease in group size after i put the accustrut on the mini 14 and i did.
i got roughly a 25% decrease in group sizes with it on. so at the end of the day it did what it said it would do and what i had wanted to see it do so it will stay on the rifle. keep in mind that i did this test outside with a slight wind and i was not slow shooting, i would say i was popping the 5 rounds out at under 1 sec per shot which would explain some of the flyers. this summer i will do this test over again but in the reverse and with more targets. i plan on doing 100 rounds or maybe even 200 with the accustrut on then another 100/200 with it off if i can make it to the range on a nice warm calm day. what a person needs to ask themselves is the following - is a 25% decrease in group size worth $160 Canadian Dollars?

hope someone finds all this info helpfull!
(ill re-post this up in the Ruger Mini 14 accuracy sticky as well so its data is readily available)
You took all that time to go out and shoot, measure and write up an ACCURACY test and you rapid fire??? Whats the point busting out the calipers if your groups aren't representative of the guns accuracy potential with or without the strut? Sure, it shows improvement but " i would say i was popping the 5 rounds out at under 1 sec per shot which would explain some of the flyers" pretty much ####s on everything you just did.

That’s acceptable for deer. Have you used your mini 30 to hunt? Have you shot a mini 14 as well .... wonder if it’s the same accuracy or perhaps slightly better?

I love the stainless steel look too .... just makes the rifle pop a little more in terms of appearance.

I wonder how the m305a in 7.62x39 compares ..... of course it’s heavier and has no bolt hold open, but they’ve occasionally been found for real cheap maybe due to low demand.

The nutnfancy trigger job video was very helpful, namely bending the trigger spring a little. I polished the sear and disconnector engagements down to 1500 grit and bent the spring a little. The 1st stage is very defined now with a light buttery smooth takeup until it hits the 2nd stage. Without doing anything with the disconnector spring the 2nd stage is a touch lighter and the creep is very smooth and short. The factory trigger stages were very heavy and gritty with a rough and tedious transition from 1st to 2nd stage. It took great care to not miss the 2nd stage and pull the shot. Now its there like a brick wall until you're ready to send it. I'm geussing its somewhere around 5 lbs and I will play with the disconnector spring in the future. But for 30 mins of my time its made a world of difference.

did I ever reply to this? I only had one of these but it was imported in 6.8 spc custom with most options, all stainless, from ASI down south in Murica, my only issue with is was first round poi, could never seem to get it to consistently land with the ones loaded by the rifle, was about a 1.5-2" delta, but it would stack 4-5 into about 3/4 to 1" with 110gr horandy v-max factory ammo after the first round....as a hunter I couldn't live with it so I sold it, and steered clear of auto-loaders ever since...is this a common theme with the mini ranch?
