Imput needed! What is the ideal minimum length of barrel for shooting clays?

If by " shooting in the bush", you are referring to public land, do us all a favor and join a gun club. The mess that is left in the bush, broken birds, empty shell cases, etc. really annoys the public with good reason, and of course all gun owners get blamed for it.

Clays are made from just that clay. They harm nothing by leaving them there. You are putting them back where they came from. All that there is to pick up is the shotgun hulls. If you have farmland to shoot on why would you pay to join a gun club??

Clay targets are not made of clay. Commonly available clay targets are a combination of limestone, petroleum pitch and fluorescent paint. They are toxic to pigs. In addition to the clay shards you are also leaving behind plastic wads in most cases.

Good Post Buster.
Lead is also left behind.

I picked up an 870 Express Supermag combo a little while ago. 20.5" rifle sighted smooth bore, fixed cyl choke, and 26" threaded for chokes. Think I paid $530 all in. I can do absolutely anything with it.

Then I can use the short barrel for skeet, just to try, and the long barrel for messing around on targets, just for fun.

All sorts of options!

I shoot clays with a pair of 18.5" black-shotguns (Modified 870 Wingmaster and a Mossberg 590A1). Both have fixed cylinder chokes, both blast clays out of the air. I also sometimes use my Winchester 140 semi with a 28" barrel using various chokes, I find the shorter barrels much more fun and quicker on the swing.

Not sure about you but I dont feed them to pigs.

first ever time taking my 18.5" to a local trap club shoot day and I hit 19,20, and 21 with this thing. far from ideal for the application, but I love it for an all rounder. I can see it would get frustrating if you werent hitting anything. I enjoyed trying to get higher scores on a gun that wasnt really made to do well for trap, but I wouldn't recommend it if your main goal was to break clay on trap/skeet days
