IMR 3031 for 7.62 X 39

The 7th edition Hornady Handbook lists IMR3031 for their 130gr bullet but not for the 123gr. I get good results with Re7 in my 7.62x39 Ruger No.1-A.

I can safely get a 123gr bullet going just under 2700 fps from my Ruger No.1. Quite a strong action and has a long throat. An interesting rifle to build handloads for. :)

IMR or H 4198 are the best powders in my CZ527 with bullets ranging from 123gr-150gr[Sierra .311]........1/2 groups and dandy on big bodied AB WT's or Mulies...........Harold

OK OP I'll just answer your question.

IMR3031 will work OK in your rifle with 123 grain bullets. I use it in my SKS for the same reason you want to. I have a lot of IMR3031 on hand from a bulk buy many moons back.

As mentioned, your biggest issue will be getting enough powder to fit into the case so you need a lot of neck tension to hold the bullet down on a compressed charge. I also use magnum primers. My velocities run between 2250 fps and 2300 fps but feed reliably and are well within the normal accuracy parameters of the rifle.

The loads I use are 24 to 26 grains of IMR3031 over CCI 250 magnum primers, under pulled 123 grn fmj, surplus projectiles or Speer 125 grn soft points.

This load is safe in my SKS and in all honesty, on the mild side. It's pleasant to shoot though and doesn't throw the brass so far away, making it easier to police.

I am impressed with my cast bullets. These went through 1 " of plywood and a 8 inch dead ash. Mushroomed one it a lead slug in the tree. Was happy to see most of my gas checks made it through the plywood and got peeled off by the tree
