Hi Everyone,

Wondering if anybody used IMR 4198 for .223?

I'm planning to reload some .223 for hunting coyotes in the winter. I have 2 bottles of IMR 4198 left over and plan to load with 53 gr & 60 gr bullets. Any thoughts or advice on using IMR 4198, as I know it's temperature sensitive.

It’s okay. I’ve used a fair amount of D4198 from CanAm which appears to be bulk IMR4198. Around 21.7gn gives me 3100fps from 18.5” CZ. I haven’t managed to get stellar accuracy but it’s okay.
My Tavor doesn’t like it. Seems to short cycle. I don’t think it’s a great choice for semi autos. Also it meters kinda crappy.

4198 will not cycle an AR with a rifle length gas tube. I have used as little as 19 grains with a 62FMJ and it cycles my M&P-15s, mini-14s also worked fine. I wasn't interested in testing more guns so that as much as I can say about function in semis. I made it up to 21 grains with decent SD and velocity.

In a bolt gun it's ok but not optimal in my experience. It doesn't work reliably in my AR15s though. In my .222 it works great with 50gr bullets, one of the best powders for that.

I use 22.1gr under a Speer #1029 50gr. Shoots accurately out of my AR and cycles well, even in sub-zero temperature. That's with a carbine gas 16" barrel. I'm putting a midlength gas 16" on it soon and fingers crossed that will also cycle!

I use Canada Ammo's D4198 for .223 in a Savage bolt action
69g SMK and 55g Vmax both shoot under 1inch groups
funny that both loads are the same @ 19.8g
Here are targets of 5 x 5shot groups

Those are great targets!! Would you have a link to download them or are they purchased? If purchased, where?

Good thread.
I have some 15lbs of D4198 and a pile of 55gr campros.
Not looking for target shooting, mostly for glorified plinking.
However, most of my rifles are semi auto, a good mix of direct impingement and piston jobs.
T97, Tavor, Swiss, Sg540, Jard48, csa58, AR180B, Wk180C and a fistful of ARs.
Everything is from 18.5 to 20.9 inch barrel.

Seems 21gr is a fair generic.

^^^ yes I did download a bunch at Storm Tactical.
Print them off on "card stock" paper.

Canada Ammo told me to start with 17.5 grs of D4198 for a 14.5 " barreled AR with 55 gr Campro fmj 's and work up from there. That is their standard 10 % below posted data as it states on the jug.
Seems way on the low end to me .
Min / Max load data in my manual says 19-21.7 grs of IMR 4198
Loaded 5 @ 17.5 grs but haven't been able to test them yet.

Cant speak for semi's but tried D4198 and hornady bulk 55's with mil brass in a 1:7 bolt 16.5". It shoots just over .25" with 19grs. Better suited 55 and unders with a slower barrel.
