IMR 4198 in 50-70 Gov't

Hi all,
I found data for the 425 gr. ( I use 28 grs.) slug but I can't find a load for the LEE 500 gr. boolit. Can anyone help here?

According to my Quickload, 30 grains will give you 1,451FPS with 24,962 PSI, but 28 grains will drop it to 1,368 and 20,990 PSI
However that is on Quickload so I would take that 30 grains with a grain of salt!

Thanks Cat. I use 28 grs with the 425 gr slug so, I might drop that down to 26 grs and work up.

OOPSS! I thought you were talking about the 45/70 not the 50/70!!

I have a Lyman book that shows 22.3 grains starting to 28.5 grains max. Velocities 950-1188 fps. No pressures given. The bullet weight is a 498 grain, c.o.l. listed as 2.223, and to use a dacron wad. As I have never shot this caliber, take the published data for what it's worth. Use at your own risk.

When I first loaded this cartridge with 28 Grs IMR 4198 and the 425 gr slug, 50 rds loaded & fired, I got several hang fires and 2 squibs that just started the bullet out of the case but not engaging the rifling. Today, I was back at the range with the same load but this time, I installed a 3/4" foam plug over the powder...... no more problems!!

I never thought to use an ear plug for a filler. Does it take up all the space between the powder and bullet base? I've read that there can be no air space when using a filler. I've also had hangfires and squibs with some low pressure combos that should have had a filler.

These are plugs that I cut with a 1/2" punch from scrap foam that I had laying around and yes they take up all the air space in this case. The plug ends up past the case4 mouth and seating the bullet compresses the plug thereby allowing no air to remain.
PS: a friend does use ear plugs to do the same thing.

These are plugs that I cut with a 1/2" punch from scrap foam that I had laying around and yes they take up all the air space in this case. The plug ends up past the case4 mouth and seating the bullet compresses the plug thereby allowing no air to remain.

Dacron pillow stuffing from any fabric store cut into appropriate sized squares works excellent as well...cheap for a lifetime supply & cuts with scissors.
