I was reloading some .35 Whelen ammo at my Dad's place and I noticed several recipes for H4831 powder. I didn't have any but I have some IMR 4831. My Dad said that the IMR is a little bit faster than the H and that I could work with the H recipes but to reduce the charge a touch. The recipe for the H was asking for 59 to 63 grains so I loaded 58 grains of IMR 4831. The bullet is a 225 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. I haven't test fired them yet but I was just wondering if anyone can back up my theory before I sheer off my bolt handle and lose my eyes in a cloud of hot gas and fire.

They are close but not the same, Even though Hordgdons does own IMR. The Hodgdon Powders are not as sensitive to Temperature as IMR nore as dirty to shoot. I have done the same with 4895 for my 22-250 I think IMR allowed for a few grains more to build the same preasures. However IMR powder was more accrate.
Check for your self again
However ImR web page does not list 4831 there

Hodgdon does not either
However
I jst ran down stairs for you and checked 3 books Lyman, Nosler and lee, as well the IMR and Hodgdon web sites.
Nothing listed on them for IMR 4831. But does list H4831 at what you had said.
Sorry no data no answer.

IMR4831 is placed between h4350 and H4831SC on burning rate chart and is faster then H4831SC.
I think you realize that throwing 58 grain of IMR4831 in .35Whelen will overfill the case. However this load is safe (40,000psi) and still well under max pressure for that cartridge, which is (58,000psi). Burning rate for 24" bbl with IMR4831 is not great and lots of powder is wasted in shorter bbl.
If you can, go with IMR4895 and 51.5gr which is still plenty safe for pressure and will give you more velocity, over 2500fps.
Another option is Varget with 53gr of powder and safe pressure of 51,700psi. Burning rate is almost perfect and velocity is close to 2600fps.

Good Luck

Personally I don't think either of the 4831's are suitable for your load...

I would invest in a different powder, say, maybe RL-12 (if you can find it) or BL-C(2).

Hodgdon's #25 Manual lists 66 gr of H4831 as a max load for both 220 and 250 gr bullets for velocities of 2360 and 2364 fps respectively.

This should tell you something about the suitability of H4831 for the Whelen ie it's not suitable.

I tried H4831 with 250 gr bullets in my Whelen a number of years ago just for the heck of it. It was basically a waste of powder. If I recall correctly, the velocity was around 2300 fps with a case-full of powder.

IMHO, the absolute best powder for the Whelen is Alliant's RL15. With this powder one can easily get 2700 fps with 220/225 gr bullets and 2550-2600 fps with 250's.

IMR is a grain or two faster burning that H

both would be less than ideal choice in loading the Whelen

X2

I would concentrate on faster burning powders like IMR4064 they are more suitable powders for medium expansion cartridges like the 35's.

Thanks. I bought some RL-15 but I haven't had a chance to load it up yet. I'm going to borrow my Dad's shooting chrony when the weather gets better and see what's what.

Best regards,
