My friend just give me a pound of IMR 4895 ...So I thunk this isn't a real popular powder in 30-06 ... Do some of you guys have a hint on 165 gr ballistic tip and IMR 4895....

How can I know wich of the two loads above is right ???

Assume neither are! Follow Bartell's advice and start at 45 grs and work up in 1 gr increments. When you experience a pressure sign, such as an ejector mark on the case head or a sticky bolt (I consider primer flattening and case head expansion to be an unreliable indicator) you've exceeded the safe limitation of your rifle; so back off a full grain and consider that the maximum load in your rifle. If you wish to tweak the load for best accuracy work backwards from that point. If it's a hunting load, shoot the load you've determined is maximum.

Edited to add . . .
If you are unable to get to the range and work up your loads prior to hunting season, load with H-4831. It is not possible to load enough H-4831 in the .30/06 to result in an overload and velocity will be respectable.

You'll probably find that powders that have a small operating range for a given load are poorest in accuracy. ie if a powder has a a range of 45-48 grains, it wont be as accurate as say one thats 40-60 grs. Typically you might find H 4350 and 4831 to be good. I never let price be the determing factor in developing a load for powder I probably wouldnt choose again

Boomer, as usual, the above advice is great! Also, you may find the velocity about tops, and the accuracy superb.
Boomer, have you ever tried the old 220 grain round nose in 30-06 with
H4831? I first read an article by Jack O'Connor on this. He said it was more accurate than any bullet he had tried in that 30-06, and he used up all his 220 bullets just playing with it! I tried it, and sure enough, accuracy is amazing.

David, .30-06 data can be confusing because it is formulated with the expectation that people will be shooting the loads in older military rifles. This is ESPECIALLY true of IMR4895 because that is the WWII powder that was developed specifically for the Garand.

Loads designed for Garands have a limited pressure window for perfect functioning without damaging the operating rod.

Your Tikka is a modern rifle and MAY be able to take SLIGHTLY more than the ceiling for Garands. Personally, I wouldn't exceed 50 grains with a 165-grain bullet, even in a strong bolt action.

FYI, for my Garand, I use 50 grains of Varget with a 165-grain Hornady. IMR 4895 burns faster than Varget, so it would have higher pressures. I might try a load of 50 grains of IMR 4895 with a 165-grain bullet out of my Remington 700, but I'd work up slowly and carefully to that level.

Many people think that the best accuracy with this powder and bullet weight is achieved around 48 grains, anyway.

Since you already have a solid load with your N560, I'm assuming you're just playing with this powder. For this reason, you should focus on accuracy only. You already have a load that gives you 3,000 fps and superb accuracy. Now you can focus on a shorter range load with IMR 4895. You don't need to worry if it only gives you 2,650 or 2,700 fps. It will still make a hole in the paper, and should be accurate at least out to 600 metres.

Hey P-17 my Friend You're right in the target,,, Will keep N560 For my huntig load for this fall... With IMR 4895 this is only paper shooting... The ballistic Tip will nervewr see anything but paper... This is a Shipping cost that keep my N560 in the box... I've found that 63.5 gr.. Of n560 is shooting really great with BT under 1 inch but for now I'm about to get out of stock of N560 and at 95,00$ with shipping for a pound I'll wait till spring A friend of me Is going right to Higginsons Powder I'll buy a lot of N560 to have some for the year long and maybe more till next spring that my friend will go there... Thanks for the info.. Will start the load at 45 gr.. and work up this way and be very carefull at pressure sign...

Years ago that was my go to bear load, using the scalloped Remington RN Corelokt. When I get my '06 back in the next few days I going to start working with he 240 gr Woodleigh again. If they prove too heavy, I'll go back to 220's.

The Hodgdon data loads are always a little hotter it seems, especially compared to some manuals like my Speer.

But they work for me.
