i have 3 pounds of powder here that i wondering about. the IMR4831 is pretty clear, ill use IMR data for it, but the other stuff i have is pulled surplus powder that says "use 4831 data" im assuming its IMR data and not Hodgdons
ive also read that it may be a grain or 2 slower then IMR4831, not sure. im making plinking loads for a LE no5 chambered in 6.5x55, i dont really care about the fps but i think starting around 43gr should be about 2500fps, i dont plan on working up a load.

question is should i just mix the 3 powders and run it as one. or are they close enough i can just fill my hopper with what can i grab first and just use the same load data for both, i have a scope on the rifle and shots will be within 100m

also a second question about H116 powder, its pul ldown powder from the 30 carbine and only lists the load used when the US was loading 30 carbine (16gr- H116)

i read in a few places its the same as AA1680 powder, i also read its close to win 680( and i have a few pounds of that) what can i use it for? cast bullets?

If you have various flavours of the 4831-type powder, mix it all together to make a single lot. Then you will have a good powder to use to work up a load for your 6.5x55. 4831 is an excellent choice for that cartridge.

The only thing I have used H116 for is 30 carbine and a reduced load in 7.62x39 (16.5 gr) It is a fast rifle powder. You could use it for cast rifle loads.

thanks!! thats what my thought was.

and i do reload for the x39. also i shoot cast in everything i reload for aswell as jacketed (9 different cartridges), ill check it out compared to a few other good cast powders i have, like a2400, aa5744 and imr3031.

Thanks Jim. so it seems the H4831 is even slower then the IMR4831, based off the hodgdon reloading start weights, velocity and pressures,

i have 3 pounds of the stuff, ill mix it all and work up a load that allows me to hit 5" plate at 100m, ideally near the start load as to keep pressures down and save brass life.

and awesome info you emailed me and thanks for the H116 info

Old 4831 was made by IMR/Dupont, the surplus stuff was sold by Hodgdon and became known as H4831 when IMR/Dupont started peddling their powders in the early 70's, which is made in Quebec. When Hodgdon ran out of surplus, very late 60's or early 70's, they went to Nobel to get it and sold it as H4831. Not sure if Hodgdon is getting theirs from ADI in Aus now or what. So, I would assume that your 4831 is the surplus stuff, judging by the labelling. So, I would blend it with H4831 and work your load up. The IMR is faster than H, not sure what results would be with those two blended, as the surplus is a hair slower than H, but not enough to worry about, as has been said about it.
