I got a nice surprise in the mail today....a S&W K-38 Target Masterpiece that I bought on the EE last Monday ( how's that for speed?!?)

Looks like it is a nice gun It's a four screw and the serial number indicates 1957 so just before S&W went from names to model numbers.

The only issue is that I find the grips a little small so i may have to go on a hunt for S&W target grips like i have on my 586.

Love it! Looks like my 19 and 17. Is this a 38Spl only model?

If you don't like the grips sell them to me please.

M

Yep K-38's are .38 spl only (Model 14 after 1957). I don't believe S&W had a K frame .357 until the Model 19 came out.

Sorry but those diamond magna grips will stay with the gun.

Awesome!

I've owned a couple Model 14's over the years. Great target .38 Spls.

I especially like the Patridge front site for target work over the 'red ramp' front sites on some S&W wheelguns.

NAA.

I might have some target grips to trade?

Thanks but I'm going to hang on to Diamond Magna's so the gun can be returned to "stock" when or if I ever decide to sell it.

If I can't find the period correct S&W target grips I may just go the Ebay route and get a copy from Thailand. I know a couple of guys that have bought 1911 grips there and they look pretty decent.

A wise decision! I hope you enjoy your Smith as much as I enjoy my 617, 17, 19 and 29.

Hmmmm, do I need a 14?

I found a minty one at a local gunshop last spring. Probably over payed a little for it but I always wanted one and now I have it. Considered by many to be the classic target revolver. Makes me smile every time I take mine to the range.
Enjoy your new treasure. Life can be good!

Do you need a 14? That's a very simple question: Yes

They are absolutely some of the nicest shooting guns out there. As far as I'm concerned they are totally undervalued which is great if you're looking for one.

Oh man. We GOTTA have a range report on that, post haste! I have been seriously spanked in the bush league bullseye game by guys shooting those over the years. If it isn't those, it's those damned 586/686's. Those Smiths SHOOT!

Nice score, Sailor! May your stolen Saturday afternoons at the range be well wasted! ;)

I shot it last night. very smooth and typical old Smith trigger (very light and crisp). My targets weren't great even by my "so-so shooter" standards but I think that had a lot to do with the service grips. I find them small/skinny and hard to get used too. I have just bought a set of K frame target grips from a CGN'er so we'll see if that helps. I was also trying some different techniques suggested by a coach I worked with a bit on the weekend so that may have contributed to the feeling strangeness as well.

I'm definitely developing an affection for revolvers in general and Smith and Wesson in particular. I'll have to let the wallet recover a bit and then see what's next....... Older M-27 maybe? I think i prefer the older blued finish/wood grip look to the new stainless w. rubber grips sold in recent years. Although, a 686 Talo looks pretty nice!
