In the market for a new rifle

Looking to get into long range shooting. Maybe even F-class. I have a .243 but want a new gun (maybe same calibre though). Was either thinking of a Remington 700 with a stainless steel barrel in .223 (for ammo price), or .308. Or a RPR in .243 or .308. I'm confused! Should I do the 700 in my own chassis or what? how does .223 stand up in the F-class compared to .308? price range for the gun is about $1200 plus chassis or new stock and accessories + glass. or spend the $1600 on a RPR?
