I got the older 9th edition Hornady reloading manual and under .375H&H is says max load for H4895 with 270gr interlock is 62.2 @ 2600fps in a 24” barrel. My friend got the 10th edition but the same data for H4895 with 270gr interlock says max load is 68.1gr @ 2600fps in a 24” barrel. His data at 62.2 is barely off of minimum charge and roughly 2400fps. I’m very curious to chronograph these two max charges and see what it really is but I don’t have a chrony. I will post a screen shot of both manuals later.

1. If you read the front of the Hornady manuals when a specific firearm is listed a strain gauge is glued to the barrel for pressure readings. And normally a cartridge of a known chamber pressure is used to calibrate the strain gauge.

2. Powder can vary from lot to lot along with the components used.

3. It is strange that it looks like the same rifle and components were used with both manuals.

4. The manuals also tell you to start at the suggest start load and work up to be safe. And I always average several manuals for the load data.

5. My two guesses are powder variations or a typo error.

NOTE, The #6 and #7 Hornady manuals lists 68.1 of H4895 a max load with the 270 grain bullet.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but maybe somebody could help me out here.

I have a box of 7mm 100gr Hornady hollow points which I want to use for a varmint load in a 7mm-08. This bullet is discontinued by Hornady and I asked them via email if they can provide me with load data using H4895. I have the Lee 2nd edition and it list loads but only for N type powders.

Hornady answered today and said they have no load data for this bullet (realllllly...?). On another board/forum a member stated that the load data for this bullet and H4895 is in the 7th edition of the Hornady Reloading book and posted the following data/recipe:

7mm, 100 grain Hornady Hollow Point

COAL: 2.700"
H4895, starts @ 36.6 grains @ 2800 fps through 44.8 grains @ 3300 fps

Can someone confirm this data looking into the Hornady 6, 7 editions?

Thanks.

OP, I've found inconsistencies between the Lee book and the Hodgdon online data for Hornady bullets and also conflicting data with loads listed by Sierra and Hodgdon. Dunno...

Are you sure you're looking at the right cartridge for the book of the bottom picture? It's not just 4895 that's off, all the powders in there are not very suitable for 375H&H and their loads seems awfully tiny anyway. Accurate and Hodgdon provide loads similar to the book at the top, but Accurate 2460, Accurate 2230 and BL-C(2) are nowhere to be found, and seem too fast for a HH Magnum anyway.

I thought it was odd that my CZ 550 Safari did the best accuracy at max load according to my manual because that usually never happens with any of my rifles I develop loads for. Best results are usually down in the lower grain loads. Usually 2 - 4 half grains up from minimum. Turns out that its probably not even close to max load according to the # 10 manual.

Guess that's another good reason to not pay attention to the velocity and just reload what produce's the best accuracy results.

For most people who don't have the equipment to directly measure peak pressure, velocity is a not-so-bad proxy. Published datas should be taken with a grain of salt, but once your chrony tells you that you're past the maximum velocity for a given powder, it's definitely time for more thinking and less doing.

If published max velocity and published powder loads disagree, I would rely more on max velocities than on powder loads.

Second picture matches C.O.A.L. and loads for a 376 Steyr in my copy of Hornady 7. Using #3710 SP and #3715 RN - did not have the #3711 SP-RP bullets back then.

Yes, that's it. In the picture you can see the left of the page, where it says th calibre, we can see the letters match TEYR, so OP seems to have used the wrong page.

Hornady #6 manual
100 grain hollow point #2800HP
H4895 start load 36.6 max 44.8

Same H4895 load data for the Hornady #7 manual.
