I shot a doe from 40 yards away or so the other night and she only ran approx 30 yards further. The blood trail was incredible, something to behold. Some experienced hunters were telling me it was the sickest blood trail they'd ever seen. The rifle was a CVA Wolf with Barnes T-MZ sabot. Deadly combination!!!

I forgot to mention (the controversial fact) that this shot was done using a load that stayed in the rifle since last season and was even in a house fire during that time (think firemen/fire hoses)... My inner-redneck wouldn't have it any other way. And no rust in the gun to speak of using 777 pellets!!! :p:rolleyes::d;) These in-line muzzleloaders really are modern firearms!

I used my Antlerless Deer tag on a nice Doe using The 290gr Barnes TEZ with 77gr (weighed) of Blackhorn 209 at 40 yards it was like a grenade went off inside it. Very devastating bullets. Deer ran about 25 yards and piled up. My buddy’s son used my muzzleloader with the same load a week later and his was a bang-flip-flop dead on the spot
Lol

Here she is on her stomach back at camp. She had no more blood to give once she was gutted and upside down. The ground was left spotless....

2 years in a row my deer was shot with a muzzleloader....lungs were poking out the side. Not pretty at all. Using 777 and TC 300gr sabots.

the crazy thing is I have had blood trails like that on deer with a muzzleloader then the next one does not loose a drop. some bleed like stuck pigs and the next it all stays inside.

I had a similar blood trail with my WT doe in oct, was a broadside double lung shot at 75y with 180gr federal power shok .303Brit sp. She ran 30-40y spraying blood everywhere, when I found her she had a huge puddle of clotted blood coming from her nose and mouth. Hardly any blood was left in the chest cavity once I got her opened up, if there was snow on the ground it would’ve looked like a blood bath.

It's got me thinking maybe there is some validity to the ol' heavy-slow ballistics argument. I don't think a conventional .308/.270 / 30-06 can generate such a blood trail as well as maybe the slow big bores can. It's got me tempted to add a center-fire big bore to my collection!!

Same here. My doe this year went about 30 yards, no blood trail. Lungs were like jelly and body cavity was full of blood. Traditions Buckstalker.

I was in a very tall treestand, 17-18 feet and the shot was relatively close. the steep angle of the shot probably didn't hurt the blood trail either.

Ive had incredible blood trails and ive had deer shot in fresh powder snow that didnt loose a single drop of blood even when shot at powder burn distances. First deer i ever shot in snow i was so excited for a vibrant bloodtrail as it ran the 15 yards. I was disappointed. Not a drop. I do tend to aim for a high shoulder shot when i can but wont turn down a double lung. The best blood trail ive had was a nice heavy mature buck i shot on a ridge top. Thought id be smart and take the long poke while he was on the high ground instead of letting him walk right to me down the bank. 95 yards shot in the chest thru the heart and the bullrt was visable in the left ass cheek when skinned. The deer ran about 100 yards down the ravine and crossed the ditch. It looked like a lava stream of blood down the bank

This year i took a small buck with a crossbow under my stand and could ser the blood squirting out about 2' from the entrance wound. Ive seen blood flow down the fur before but this was really pumping out. At times going between trees he was painting a 6' wide path

Muzzleloaders are very effective. I use 270gr platinum powerbelts and 100grs 777. This year i loaded the 250gr areotip but didnt find an appropriate deer to try them on as i wanted a 40 yard or less broadside to test them
