So, I floated the barrel, scoped it, volqartsen hammer/extractor, muzzle brake (just for looks), and dialed the scope in at 25 yards. With federal bulk it's capable of putting 3 rounds into one hole. Not every time, but I think most of the larger groups were my fault. Can't wait to get the bipod on and start playing with ammo at longer range.

I call BS. Everyone knows you cant get a 1-hole shooter out of the box. At the very least you have to spend 3X more to get a barrel and fancy stock to shoot decent....oh wait...I just realized it was a 597.....nevermind ;)

Maybe you only hit the target once and are assuming the others must have gone through there as well? :D

I've got a 597 as well.. floated, pillared, VQ hammer and extractor. You can't beat a rifle for under $400, including upgrades (take that 10/22 guys) that'll shoot flies. Mine's a little fussy on the ammo. It hates 40gr Lead Federal terribly but devoures the Federal 36gr copper bulk like cheetos. Go figure. So it's $13 bricks for shooting paper/cans and $25 bricks of Blazers for critters. Can't beat it...

Hi guys, I am new to this site and a fairly new into firearms as well. I have recently purchased a 597 Remington 22 stainless/laminate with a tasco 4 power scope and have been trying to get it dialed in, they best I can seem to achieve is about a 4" group at 75-80 yds. Now I realize that this is bordering the outskirts of this guns range but I was hoping for a little more than this, Am I dreaming?

PS Grouping is consistent into 25 yds.

Thanks
Kris

Could easily be wind. What are you grouping at 25?

3" at 25 and 4" at 75? that makes no sense. 75 is three times as far...

Are you using a benchrest? 3" at 25 with a benchrest is horrible... a bad group at that range for me is 1". I can shoot 3" groups in rapid fire.

At about 25 yds I can get closer to about a 3" group.

I was in the same boat. I tried everything, bedding, floating, different torque on action screws, every brand of ammo I could find....nothing helped. Then (from info found here and rimfirecentral) I measured the action screws and found they were a tad long. So when I was really tightening them they must have been bottoming out. I cut them down a bit. Tried it again with just the action screws snugged in (not too tight), didn't make much difference. Then I really tightened the actions screws and what a difference. It will now shoot 3/4 inch (sometimes better) at 50 yards (using cci blazer and fed champion).
I remember when I first got it and read the manaul. It stated the action screws should be tightened to (I think) 35 inch pounds. When I tried it at the time, it seemed awefully tight and I doubted it was necessary. Now with the shorter action screws, it makes a big difference for me with accuracy when they are at least that tight.

glad for you mate i personally fancey the 10/22 and the thompson 22 auto loader and havent been to keen on remingtons in general but you seem happy
i remember in around 98/99 my friend bought one and the first time we took it to the dump to shoot rats his was constantly misfireing and i have more remington horror stories,
