I am looking for a simple, and inexpensive holster for a full sized 1911, to start practising at my club.

I know absolutely NOTHING whatsoever about holsters and was wondering if you guys could help me out. I don't really care what kind of material it is made of, just something inexpensive for a beginner to practise with that won't beat up the finish on my gun too much (or at all if possible). I can always get a good one later if I enjoy myself.

Any suggestions?

Bladetech 5.11, Uncle Mikes is not legal for IDPA should you ever want to try it out.

Find a local 511 dealer, or go through a sponsor or order online. These are only $30-40. Bladetech has another line that is about double the cost, but the 511 ones are a great deal IMO. Comes with paddle & belt attachments.

I got one of these (for my Browning HiPower, but you'll see there is a version for your 1911.) Seems like good value to me - simple, solid construction, fits perfectly, cheaper than many alternatives:

Fobus!

Look them up, they are cheap and they work very very well. Have one for my 1911, Beretta 92 and S & W, which is also the holster for the Sigs. Usually about $ 40.00 each.

I picked up a Triple K Nylon holster from Marstar last month for $20, it is listed for 4" barrel pistols, but Jim at Marstar told me it will fit a 1911 in it, I tested my M&P9 and 1911 in it, both fited fine, the holster has open bottom end, so 1911 barrel will stickout about 1".

Fobus thumbs-up

I'll "second" the Fobus suggestion ... I have two. One for a 1911, and one for a S&W model 66.

If you nose-around on EBay (like I did) you still might find a seller who isn't gouging on shipping costs.

Thanks guys. I found a Fobus paddle holster on ebay for $23US and free shipping. Does that sound like a good deal? Only thinking is I am not sure how it mounts, like to a belt, or just slides on my pant waist band. Which does the Fobus do? Is this a knockoff?

Just type this number into the the ebay home screen and it will take you right to the item: 280352421541

Or would I be better of getting the compact version: 250435167046

The only difference between the two is the amount of holster that covers your slide. If you were to run a commander or officers 1911 for concealed carry the compact would be the ticket. Seeing how the OWB holster(outside the waistband) in question is less than ideal for CCW I don't think its an issue.

On a side note. If you're going to get serious about drawing from a holster, don't cheap out and get a good belt to go with.

Thanks TDC so either would do fine? There's no advantage or disadvantage to either?

Also, how is it that this model is mounted? I don't see belt loops anywhere. Does it come with?

The holster you're looking at is called a paddle holster. Its essentially a giant clip that goes over your belt and inside your pants. They're super easy to put on and take off. The down side is that you might have issues removing the holster when you draw your pistol if you don't tighten your belt enough. The other issue with paddle holsters is their tendency to move around. Personally I prefer "thread on" holsters with belt loops, either fixed or "quick disconnect".

As for the actual holster dimensions. There is no real advantage or disadvantage. Both being polymer/kydex there is a near zero reduction in weight if you were to opt for the compact. If you don't want your slide exposed or are concerned with scratches then the full size would be the better choice.
