I'm starting to shop for a decent budget pack. Somewhere around $100-150. Do you guys have any that you found were good ? I saw an alps outdoorz traverse that looked promising. But it's the only one I've gotten a close look at .

I've heard quite decent reviews of the Kelty Redwing packs. Or there's the 5.11 Rush lineup.

What size are you looking for? Day pack, weekend pack? Expedition pack size for carrying back a deboned elk?

What features do you want? One big compartment or lots of pockets?

My personal pack is a Mystery Ranch 3 Day Assault Pack, but it's about quadruple your budget.

About the size of a big day pack. With some kind of stiffening frame and a waist belt with pockets.
I also like the idea of being able to carry my rifle on it for really awkward terrain.

Cabellas and Bass Pro have a pretty good selection, not exorbitantly priced. I've always found there are not enough outside pockets on most packs,

I built a "Kifaru Gun Bearer" type rig that attaches to my frame pack. Slick as snot and will even secure my 12.5" 870, though not much room to spare. I like the versatility of a frame pack for huinting because you will inevitably have to pack heavy loads and for that job the frame pack is the king of the hill. I can't see how any internal frame pack could carry the load of a properly set up frame pack though it would appear that people have carried some staggering loads in the big Eberlestock packs. But on the US forums the trend seems to be to take the Eberlestock out as a day pack, shoot an animal and briong the first load out int he Eberlestock then pick up the frame pack at the truck and use it to pack out the rest. Seems to me that if you're dumping $400-$500 on a pack you shouldn't need to pick up a second pack for $150 to complete your rig.

The other bonus to a frame pack is that you can lash things to the outside of the pack to save the internal space though some of the bags available have decent external pockets.

But backpacks will invariably end up being too small, no matter what you buy. I'm sure that there are guys out there with V90 Battleships that are #####ing that the pack is too small for their uses.

Watch for Cabela's packs to go on sale, or pick up a used one!!

If you're going with a non hunting specific pack, make sure that the thing isnt noisy. I have one where the buckles and things all make a fair bit of noise as you're walking along.

Thanks guys for your input. After all my searching around in my price range i only found 2 that really looked like what I think I want in a pack. The eberlestock lodrag that titch mentioned and the alps traverse. The lodrag was actually the one I liked best but I found the alps pack for half the price and picked it up instead. It looks like it'll fit everything I need, it's quiet , looks pretty durable and it's really comfortable to wear. Waist pockets look just barely big enough for my rangefinder.
