Recently an older fellow approached me asking for help finding out about his Savage 99. I'm definitely no expert on them but I know they've got quite a following so thought I'd ask you guys and see if there's anything interesting about this gun. Any info is great as he's had this gun since the early 1950's and would like to know more about it.

Info I do have:
S/N 50.3XX - not sure if the "." makes a difference in dating it. My checking makes me think it's a 1905 mfr but I don't know for sure.

Caliber is 30/30

It looks like the tang has been drilled and tapped with two set screws in it now, not sure if it's supposed to look that way. Also has a chunk of wood missing behind the tang.

Looks like a 1905 Savage 1899C.
The 1899A had a 26 in. round barrel, the 1899B had an octagonal barrel, and the 1899C was half round, half octagonal.

It's in rough shape, so not worth more than a couple of hundred dollars, pretty well just a wall hanger, or a parts gun in that condition.
If it was in excellent original condition with no tang crack etc, it would be worth up to $1500.00.

Wall hanger? Open a window, you're being CO'd to death! I agree that it's rough but the damn thing would probably still sell for $300. Prices are ridiculous on 99s. The gods know that I'm looking for one!

B U M is bang on.

The holes in the tang with the filler screws are for a tang sight. They are factory.

Being a C in a Winchester cal helps it. The butt plate is worth some $$$ alone.

Anyone have a non takedown 1899A in 30-30 they wanna trade for a TD 1899A 30-30?

It doesn't match my B and C :p

back on topic, if the bore is good that old girl would be a good candidate for a redo.

The tang wood can be replaced

I gave away for free one that looked similar to that one. My safe was too full and needed the room. I called her my ugly gal! I was new on CGN at the time and didn't ask for a possible value of it, as I was only in the EE threads and had no clue on picture posting. I shipped it to Ont to a new friend on this site.

I think the $200 estimate is quite realistic. The rifle has no finish remaining, wood is buggered up also. If it has sentimental value it would be a good candidate for a refinish if the bore is good enough. If not it still is a decent truck gun or can be parted out.

I'm always on the lookout for new friends.;)

Thanks guys - I passed on all the info. I don't think he was planning to sell or restore, he was just interested in what he had and didn't know how to find out about it.
