This is not a rifle I collect but came in a group and could use some help as to its purpose.
I was told its an A4 sniper ready rifle. Any input appreciated

What Tiriaq said is correct. This is practically impossible to fake, meaning this is an A4 receiver. It would appear to have been refurbed after the war and given a new bolt, as the bolt handle is not modified like it is on A4 snipers.

Are there any cartouches on the stock?

Either way, what you have here is worth considerably more than a standard A3.

Thanks for the info
No markings on the stock other than a number “3”
Bore is shiny but not strong rifeling
Appears to be slight corrosion half way down bore
Can you give me an opinion in what I should ask as it’s not in my area of collecting

This rifle has the wrong stock for the 03A4. I believe it should be a "C" type stock.

I agree with the others, the receiver is definitely an 03A4 original.

I wonder what the story behind that very nice rifle is?

It would be interesting to do some research on such a rifle when it's in our personal possession. All sorts of things may have happened, quite legitimately, during FTRs from a period when the 03A4 rifles were being sold out of service, or it could have been a "replacement" receiver from stores, and the list goes on until it gets to someone putting it together from parts "after" it left its martial career.

That receiver may have gone home in a lunch bucket?

Lots of interesting ideas.

I know a fellow with an original No4 MkI T receiver, all drilled and tapped and he uses it as a bed to set up the scopes and brackets to be on zero.

What's going to happen to it after its present caretaker passes on the torch? Maybe it will become a similar rifle to that in your pic or???????
