was wondering if anybody out here has some info or experience with this round

looks like an 8mm Magnum, shooting 224 gr @ 2850 fps

who made rifles chambered for this cartridge?

thanks!

I've got a Oberndorf Mauser in 8X68 S, with a Zeiss scope on claw mounts.

BTW, that belt is not on there as a sling anymore, that pic was from before I bought it.

Here's a comparison of 8mm cartridges

Nice rifle!!:)

Is that a tang safety???

Yes it is a tang safety, as well as the bolt safety too. They both function, so I don't know why it has both. I assume because the tang safety was put on aftermarket and the bolt safety was just left as is.

thanks for the info guys

Bronco DIddler, that is quite the scope mount you got there! any close ups of that??

although nice, that gun is waayyy too euro for Bartell

I'll take some pics and put them up tomorrow.

I have an 8x68S in a steyr mannlicher model S with double triggers. Very accurate, powerful cartridge similar to an 8 mm mag and very close to a 338 win mag. Brass is painfully expensive if you can get it ( I use RWS at a cost of about 2 bucks a case:eek: ). Hirtenberger is cheaper if you can find it. RWS does give great case life if you take care of em and don't heat them up too bad pressure wise. I am shooting 67 grains of IMR 4350 behind a 220 grain sierra gameking. Excellent ballistic coefficient and very economical. My rifle loves em. (Moose hate em!) Easily sub MOA in this rifle using set trigger. There is not an animal on this continent that can't be harvested reliably with this cartridge with appropriately constructed bullets. I like the beltless design of this cartridge. Recoil is very manageable for a cartridge of this power, but I think this is a function of the excellent balance and stock design of this rifle. An excellent choice for a handloader.

There is one drawback. DO NOT use lighter bullets (<185 grain ) on game. They are generally designed for use in an 8mm mauser, and will not withstand impact on game at the higher velocities, ruling them out for all but long range shooting. I learned this the hard way. But you do get screamin' velocities and trajectories with them, making them excellent for punching paper.

You can form 8x68S brass out of 300 win mag cases. That's how I got started. Turn the belt off the cases, trim the case and fire form it. Case life is poor using these cases, but they are better than nothing.

If you have any questions or need further info, I will try to help:)
