Where can I find out more about custom rifles, including things like building them, manufacturers, and reputations of components, etc.

Are there any other forums with an abundance of useful information already at disposal that I can read through?

If you want to start with a builder, the first one that I would talk to is Rick Timmins at Alberta Tactical Rifle. His workmanship and customer service are second to none.

Alberta Tactical Rifle (Alberta), Lyle Linkaitis (Manitoba), Dave Jennings (BC), and the list goes on, (not excluding any quality gun smiths on forum I have not dealt with).

We are graced by some very tallented individuals in Canada who are capable of builing some of the best quality precision rifles made.

Talk with some of the Gunsmiths, many have certain quality items they are very familiar building around. They can then guide you in selecting components to meet your need, wants. etc.

Depends what you want D Henry in Bentley will make a custom.
I like coopers which are semi custom. For them you go thru Jo Brooks
in Brandon MB

I was under the impression that a custom rifle could be built by anyone, but it sounds like they can only be created by gunsmiths. How does this all work?

It all depends on what you mean by "building"

Most customs these days have aftermarket barrels on tuned commercial actions, with aftermarket riggers, trick mounts, fancy stocks, etc.

The gunsmithing comes into pplay with fitting and chambering the barrel, tuning triggers and adjusting magazine feed rails, or buildning new ones, etc.

Some rifles like the 10/22, or the Savage Centerfires can be tricked out by the average Joe, because of the barrel lock up sytem they use, and both rifles have an abundace of after market stuff available.

To do most centerfire riflees however, a gunsmith is needed to actually "build" or assemble the rig.

I am presently having a rifle built by Rick at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply. A friend of mine is also having the exact same thing built simultaneously. A 300WinMag with a PGW Timberwolf action, McMillan A5 stock and US Optics SN3 scope. We have been working out the details for about a month now with Rick and he has been great! He never seems to get tired of our endless emails full of questions. So far it has been a pleasure to deal with him, we should have our rifles in about 6 months.

No.
IDIOT!
What da ya think?! Gosh!

I'm gonna hunt wolverines in Alaska with my flippin' sweet 12 gauge!

Do think I would really shoot a Liger? Heck no! It's pretty much my favorite animal cuz it's bred for its skills in magic.

...thanks guys for helping out :D

Custom rifles or customized rifles can be done my many competent gunmiths, some like me specialize in the more tactical style bolt action rifles and long range hunters.
The key to finding the right guy for the job is to figure out exactly what you want the rifle to be used for, and what features fit your bill.
The next part is to satify in your mind that the person you select understands the needs and that you are comfortable dealing with them.
There are some fellows in the trade that either will agree to everything in an instant, they may be hungry and need your $$ more than looking to fill your best interests, or try to talk you away from something with no real grounds , if there is solid reasoning behind the objections fine, some things do work and others do not. Doing some research as to what a smith has real expertice in will help you decide as well.
For example, I can make pretty fair tactical rifles, and long range hunters, I also do some ultralite builds, but my main focus is bolt guns, I am not tooled or knowledgeable in falling blocks . levers, or non military semi autos, it just is not my interest, so I specialize in what does peek my interest. Others in the area have a well known following for their abilities with levers and so on. There are many different custom makers in all of the types of rifles, so my advice is to shop around for someone who can put together what fits your needs and wants.

'Huhuh' Prairie Gun Works-Winnipeg

Prairie Gun Works yet again does some incredible work. In fact at the trials to replace the Canadian Med Range sniper systems the Timberwolf "ate" the competion!! (Pardon the pun)

They are however VERY busy building the guns for their newly won defence contract. If you want one bad you'll have to get in line.

I figure I'll give them a year to get settled on the work they have, then I'll order one from them.

BIG $$$ but should be worth it. Till then the HS is a tac-driver. I need to get better before I get a higher quality gun.
