A friend and I went to visit a gentleman who lives down the road who is an avid collector of firearms and both military and RCMP memorabilia. I wish I had brought my camera.

Besides showing me a small portion of his collection, he also showed me some of his prizes such as a german bayonet that was brought back by a vet from WWII. Also a beautiful sabre with some sort of royal crest on the handguard.

The neatest piece though was a small 4"X4" booklet that was hard bound with a red cover. It was in very good shape. It was dated 1913 and printed by "Authority". It seemed like it was sort of an instruction manual for a serviceman around WWI. It had fold out diagrams of No. 4 rifles and had instructions on tactics and shooting skills. Neat piece. Are these rare?

He also has a p38 pistol he got from another vet who's since passed away. Best part is, he's invited us to join him on a shoot in a couple weeks.

I think I made a friend. : )

"Printed by Authority"?

Hardback?

Red Cover?

Sounds as if it would have been the manual for "Rifle", 1913 edition. The red covers were standard for this period. Actual books were issued by His Majesty's Stationery Office on London.

The "Rifle" in point would have been the SMLE III: the Rifle, Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield, Mark III. It does look a lot like a Number 4 in many ways but there are differences.

These little books are NOT common today, especially the original 1913 edition. More common by far is the 1915 revision.

Sounds as if you have made a friend. Good. Keep your ears open and you might learn a lot.

Have fun!
