i just got some 225 gr ttsx bullets for my .338 win mag and a friend of mine told me with these bullets if you don't hit front shoulder or bone they will pass through without mushrooming, and the game will run,i usualy use nosler balistic tip bullets and always had great luck but can't get them for 338 anyway i would like to know your experiances with the ttsx bulletts and how they work on game thanx trevor.

There is no cut and dried way to determine the amount a bullet will upset(mushroom), bullets made of pure copper(no lead) tend to penetrate deeper and expand less then other bullets. Animals hit with bullets that don't mushroom much tend to run for a spell, however this is not a hard fast rule, and it still depends on shot placement, and every shot/bullet tends to act differently.

Your friend is clueless.:D

Yes, your friend doesn't have a clue ..................... ;)

First picture is of the entry wound caused by a .338 210 grain TTSX on the moose I shot last fall. Distance was just over 200 yards and as can be seen no bone - not even ribs - was hit on the entry.

The second picture is of the exit on the same moose. As can be seen expansion was good even without hitting any bone at all.

Exit wound before the work began cutting the bugger into 6 pieces to pack out to the trail. LoL Notice all the lung tissue dripping out of the hole.

What game are you hunting with this combo?

I used to use the Hornady 180gr Interlock exclusively in my 30-06, until last year that is. The first animal that I hit last year was my elk, it hit him with 2 shots, one through the ribs, and one totally frontal. Both bullets shed their core, and ended up on the hide, even though they both went through very little if any bone.
This caused me to re-think my bullet of choice.............and I wasn't going to pick a hornady product, as it was apparent that Hornady had changed this bullet.
In the interm, I moved to the Barnes 165gr TSX bullet (without the tip). I hit 2 deer with this bullet, both where through and throughs hitting very little bone, and showing expansion on the way out, and both animals went about 10 yards before piling up. The tip should encourage more expansion than this bullet. My official bullet is now the 168grTTSX without apologies.

I've seen somewhere around 75-80 big-game animals killed with TSX/TTSX bullets at this point, and I can tell you this- hit the important parts and game goes down fast. I've slipped bullets between the ribs a number of times and they never go more than 50 yards (80% don't go more than 50 inches, and 95% don't go more than 30 yards). This is just my experience and YYMV, but I'd wager a guess that your friend hasn't seen many animals killed with TTSX bullets...

I would use the 210 or the 185 TTSX for moose, the 225 is overkill but it will expand. In my 338 last year I stepped down to the 160 TTSX and it completely passed through the front shoulder and two ribs.

Horsesh1t.

The TTSX is a little harder than a TSX (I think this a good thing at magnum velocities), but expansion is a sure thing.

The Ballistic Tip is a POS hunting bullet IMHO.

So Trevor .....

What game do you plan on hunting with your 338 loaded with TTSXs?

If you're just blasting deer, you'll do just fine with a conventional C&C bullet like a Hornady and save some cash while you're doing it.

Used TSX in a .270 130GR IIRC, hit a WT buck at 15 yards in the ribs. The butcher asked me why I was using hand grenades for deer hunting :D

I actually stopped using them for deer because of the mess they make. I'm a meat hunter so I shoot for the lungs.

I'm not sure the results would be any different at that distance/velocity with another bullet. I've found high velocity to be the biggest factor for ruined meat.

I still develpoing loads with the 225gr TTSX and Accubonds in my 338-06AI. Both shoot great! I never shot any game with the TTSX but should be a sweet bullet for your 338WM. I am probably going to stick to the Accubonds as I reload them in my 300WM and 270WSM and they perform flawlessly! Never know, maybe I'll be different with tmy 338-06AI anuse the TTSX's.

That was my opinion until my last draw Mule Deer hunt in AB with my Daughter and Son In Law. As luck would have it, my Daughter and I both hit our animals in virtually the identical spot. I was using a 308NM with my favorite Sierra 200gr SBT in reloads and my Daughter, a 300WSM with Barnes 180gr TSX. The meat loss in my animal, because of lead fragmentation, was at least double that on my Daughters animal. I've since changed over to Barnes TTSX in four calibers.

Tsx

I agree Johnn, The Barnes seem to do less meat damage than the old bullets. When the old lead core bullets fragment they make a huge mess!!! There is also no worries about eating lead fragments in your ground meat.
