I am wondering if a muzzle brake affects anything else other than recoil and noise. Does it affect velocity or accuracy at all? Also, who in Alberta installs them, and what is a ballpark price?
Any other advice or experience with muzzle brakes is welcome. The rifle I'm interested in putting one on is a Win M70 Stealth II in 223 WSSM.
Thanks,
Tater

um, why do you want to do this? Muzzle breaks are usually for heavy recoiling calibers. If you could explain what you are trying to acheive, perhaps we could offer an alternative.

Muzzle brakes, if properly designed and installed, have no affect on ultimate accuracy. It may change POI or the best loads but that would occur anytime the barrel is modified.

The 223 WSSM is not a heavy recoiling rig so maybe more hassle then its worth.

I thought the same as you guys about installing a muzzle break on a .223 didnt think it would make any difference. I installed a Mikuluck muzzle break on my wifes Armalight AR it realy did tame it down, to my supprise. I wouldnt put one on mine, man thing, but if you are interested in Muzzle breaks and if it would be worth doing to your rifle give Rick a call at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply in Calgary.

Muzzle brakes can change your point of aim.

I installed a Bushmaster "Y" Comp brake on my AR SPR upper and noticed it shot 10" lower with the brake.

But from the bench, there was no recoil or muzzle rise what so ever. The rifle did NOT move when fired. It was a little louder when standing to the side though.Rapid fire at the 200 meter gong was easy.I could get every shot into the gong (the gong is 12" X 12")as fast as I could pull the trigger.

I have made and used several muzzle breaks, the point of impact does change when you install or remove the break. There are people who claim muzzle breaks can damage your hearing even with muffs on. I use ear plugs and muffs when shooting firearms with breaks.

Im looking at installing a A2 comp or Mikuluck brake on my savage 223, So it doesn't move off paper and for faster follow up shots. Its only 223 it doesn't kick that much, but using a bipod, I find its enough to knock it off the paper.

Smith Ent used to make a post ban brake that uses setscrews and it was the same dia as my barrel, but seems that they discontuined it.

I am very leary on any brake not threaded onto a barrel. The forces applied to the brake are huge. It should IF the brake is working. I have had my fair share of launches over the years even with threads (too shallow a thread, would be an installer mistake). Make sure you put some form of anti seize compound on the threads too. The pounding will seize things up in a big hurry.

I use brakes a lot and really like them for allowing me to spot my own shots. They are just not much fun in a hunting rifle where there is little time to put on hearing protection. OUCH>>>>

Here is a pic of the Micaluk brake mounted onto my Savage 7RM. Very effective design and well priced. Will have one and other stuff for sale shortly.

Thanks for the replies, I should have given more info. The reason for my interest in the brake is to control muzzle jump so I can better keep my eyes on the target. The rearward recoil isn't a problem with this gun. Also how much would the brake add/subtract to the barrel length?

X2 on the effect of the muzzle brake. I recently shot 5.56 with a muzzle brake for the first time. The lack of almost any movement was a real eye opener. Getting dark as shooting commenced, so just got the rifle zero'd, can't comment on change in POI.

I stuck one of those wierd looking breaks from JP. on my target AR. and am very pleased on well it worked. I also put one of tactical breaks by JP. on a carbine AR. with not much noticable improvement other that it pisses of anybody shooting on either side of it.
