Gents,

Forgive me/##### at me if this has been discussed ad nauseum.

Looking to fly to the US and do a Carbine course at HSP or the likes. Has anyone had experience taking their own rifles/pistols to one of these courses? Can you pay to borrow some once there?

And to head this off now, I am a dual US/Canada citizen.

Training is covered under ITAR, I'd first look at who you want to train with, contact them and ask them politely regarding ITAR restrictions of training foreign nationals. I talked to Chris Costa at SHOT he said their were a lot of Lawyer fees (several thousand dollars) to deal with ITAR, however that was more with regards to him coming up here and running a course which he said would probably only be possible for unit/agency training to get it approved.

Sorry re-read your post and realized your a dually. ITAR will be approached differently but I'm not exactly sure how. You likely won't need any special State Department approval as an American citizen.

To get a carbine into the states it will have to be non-NFA so 16" or 14.5" with a perm welded flash suppressor/muzzle break. You will need any States hunting license and/or and invite from a club/range where you will be attending your course. Then you need to get a 6NIA temporary import form which you will list all firearms you plan on bringing to which is then sent to the ATF for approval.

Is this process one of those things, you should start 3 years in advance to have it done in time?
 
I remember seeing on one of the application forms (I believe for Magpul Dynamics) under ITAR you have to be a US Citizen to participate in the course. So if you have dual you should be good-to-go ...... for the rest of us though it'll get pretty complicated
