informal clay shooting

Hi Guys,

Got a couple of questions I hope you can help me with

1.) I have a trius one-step that I use for some informal shooting out on the family chunk of bush-land. Throws singles fine. Doubles usually results in clay shrapnel being thrown in an arc in front of me. I have screwed around with the little metal strap that holds the clays on the throwing arm, but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

2.) I am basically a lazy, lazy man (hence my status as calorically challenged);) . If I can avoid cleaning up my mess - that is shards of broken clays and wads - I would prefer to do so. I thought there was someone in Canada making biodegradable clays, no? What about biodegradeable wads. This isn't really a big issue for me, just wondering if there was an easier way to keep things clean.

Thanks for whatever insights you have.

As far as I know all clays are biodegradable, as they are made of mud.
Not quite. The composition of a typical "clay" target is powdered limestone, 1/3 petroleum/coal tar pitch and flourescent paint. They last a very, very long time.

There are biodegrable targets on the market but even the manufacturers say it takes a couple of years before they are gone. http://www.biotarget.com/

As for the question about plastic wads there are fiber wad loads but they aren't easy to find or inexpensive. In the interests of preserving domestic harmony I use a 2-1/2" fiber wad, non-tox load made by Kent while hunting our rural property. It would be a pricey proposition to use them for clays. The sell for around $80 for a box of 25.

I checked my boxes of Lawry clays and it doesn't acctually say biodegradable, instead it says "NON TOXIC TO PLANTS AND BACTERIA, ENVIROMENTALLY FRIENDLY" I guess that means that it won't harm anything but it will stick around for a while.

It may help if you bought only "all black" targets, instead of "orange dome" or "all orange" targets. All black targets are available from Lawry's ( they just suspend the spray painting of the targets as they come down the line)

Kent/Gamebore has a couple of fibre wad loads which also helps reduce the clutter. Try some 2-1/2" Pure Gold" 1 oz loads. They have a fibre wad and work very nicely.

A couple of good friends use this approach on their private sportaing clays set-ups on their properties. Very little to clean-up, and what there mat be left on the ground is quite unoticeable.

Do you reload? Card and cushion wads are still available (Ballistic Products and Circle Fly come to mind), and recipes to load them. If you want to use shotcups, I don't know anyone who makes biodegradable ones, but I roll my own for my muzzleloaders out of light cardstock, and sometimes old business cards. I haven't tried them in cartridges yet.
