First off, hello, CGN! First post.

Also, apologies if this has been repeated somewhere - I have tried searching but didn't find anything that looked appropriate.

I'm wondering if there is anything stopping me from setting up an informal range on private property. I will be shooting non-restricted guns, I've got a PAL and the appropriate documentation, and I have checked and there are no municipal by-laws restricting discharge of firearms (Ignore my profile location of "waterloo" - I know discharge of firearms is not allowed here. This is at a friend's place up north).

Is it ok to set up a few targets against a backstop and go shooting?

Furthermore, if it's ok to do this on private property, is there anything stopping me from doing this up north by a hunt camp on crown land (provided everything is done safely, of course)?

Thanks in advance

The main reason I'm asking is because I always thought you could just safely shoot on your own land, but someone told me that with restricted guns you can't even "move" them to the same address to shoot. If you wanted to take them outside and never leave your property (just use your own informal range) you have to file the paperwork to turn your land into an approved firearms range first and get an ATT to travel 10 feet outside your door.

Just wondering if the same applies to non-restricted even though an ATT is not involved.

so long as you are not violating discharge laws for the area, are on private property, or approved crown land, you shouldn't have a problem with plinking around or shooting cans with your non-restricted firearms. If neighbours are around they may complain about the noise, but that's a whole different issue...

PS: WELCOME to CGN!!

That's what I thought - feels better hearing it from someone else though.

Thanks!

Plinking is not the same as target shooting. Plinking is wandering around shooting at random targets like tree stumps, etc. The daft MNR thinks that's the same as hunting. Setting up a safe range with a good back stop and knowing exactly what is behind the back stop out to several miles, is not.
