Sitting on my lilypad in southern Quebec
It seems that the main theme for this summer in my area is rain! How's a guy supposed to go out and blast groundhogs if it rains evey time he gets a few hours away from work/family obligations?????

I'm sick of this rain, if my luck continues by the time moose season opens it will be 35 degs and the swamp donkeys will be moving only at night....:mad:
 
Man I totally agree with that. I live in Quebec City and I had the St-Jean and Confederation week off on vacation. So much for some nice weather.

Where you from and how far are you from Quebec City?

I've been looking for people to shoot groundhogs around this area. Heck on a sunny day I would even drive 200km to gather up and shoot some vermin with fellow gunnutters! I've never done it before!

I have a problem thought, I only have my .22 LR that is scoped. My Norc M14S and SKS are on iron sights.

Is it possible to shoot groundhogs straight on iron sights? Or with a shotgun? :rockOn: Again I'm totally noob on this!
 
Montreal here, and I own/operate an a/c outfit here. Between the rain & coldish weather, you can barely give away a/c.

Guess it's true what they say. God does dole out payback if you've been naughty....:p

Iron sights are a nice challenge, and I find a rifle with open sights easier to use in the spring when the hogs are less spooked by your presence and the foilage is not as dense, the .22 is fun out to around 50 yards but in some places they can be dificult to approche that close.

I'm in the St-Atanase sector of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu....... we were annexed in the mergers. :mad: I'm a good 2 and a half hours from Quebec City.

What to do when it rains?

You could buy a rain jacket and go shoot ground hogs.....That's just what I do though.

No rain today.....

.....and I managed to get off work early. :D

So I get home change and get my gear together. Pack, ammo, the .243, water and off I go to a farm nearby. When I got there Mr. Farmer was out working on a bailer so since I hadn't seen him in close to 6 months I took the time to shoot the s$#t with him.
Boy oh boy is the vegatation high. Corn is well over a foot high and the irrigation ditches are overgrown with wild flowers. So I parked the Jeep and walked the limits of the fields. One hog ran from the corn to the ditches about 200 yards in front of me. His little legs going as fast as it could. Time visable; 2 seconds and it was gone. Oh well there will be others. After 2 hours and no other signs of fur I decided to try another farm.

Good news! they have just picked up their second cutting of hay! I can see!
Well I drive to the back of the farm and start a slow drive through the fields nothing but crows and seagulls. They have more land behind their parents home across the range road so I went to see if they had cut the hay there also. Yep, freshly cut and low and behold I spot a hog munching away at the grass.....YESSSSSSSS. First one of the season...... so I shut off the engine and grab my rifle, walk to within about 150 yards of the hog. It's still eating but has noticed me and is slowly working its way towards the higher grass near a ditch. Not alarmed but cautious. So I park my but on the ground, steady my elbows on my knees, squeeze the trigger and BANG......the last thing I saw in my scope was his fat ass running through the grass and into the ditch. I missed.......f$%k. Oh well I know where his burrow is now and I hope to get out again Sunday.
At least I got out there. Saw some hawks, a whole slew of cedar waxwings ( in my opinion one of the most beautiful birds ) and got away from it all. No hog but I feel refreshed
