My friend has a McMillan fiberglass stock inletted for a RH LA Model 700 (Sako style). The barrel on his custom 416 Rem Mag is too large in diameter to fit in the barrel channel of the stock.

I am looking for reccomendations on who could fit the action and stock together, and also to glass bed the action.

thanks in advance,

TB

I'm very surpised that you yourself cannot do that job, TB!
However, any of the decent 'smiths around like Guntech, leeper, D. Henry, etc. should be able to handle it.

You could also give Paul Reibin a call at (250) 372 7030.
he isn't on the internet, but does great work, located in Kamloops.
Turnaround time is excellent.

How much bigger is the barrel than the barrel channel?

You have to be careful with some of the lightweight stocks out there because they have a foam core in them, if you hog out the channel too much you can break through into the foam core. I don't know if the Macmillan is pure fiberglass or if it does indeed have a foam core.
They usually say what barrel contours that they can be inletted to.

Its a fairly basic job final fitting and bedding the rifle, most anyone can do it if they take there time. I have the opposite problem right now, my barrel is too small for the channel so I have to fill in the gap.
As I posted before my Bansner stock inletting was off by a fair bit so I had to massage it a bit more. Pretty easy work and nothing that can't be fixed with fiberglass or epoxy if you make a small mistake. I'm actually bedding it right now, just taking a coffee and CGN break.

well the thing is I do not *want* to do it

I have dremel tooled enough stocks to know I do not like doing it. Have also bedded a few stocks.

I am not opposed to giving gunsmiths some work, especially considering how it is not my rifle :)

I'd be leery about using a Dremel as well........1 oops and lots of heartache.
Rockchucker on the board here just installed a ~1.25" diameter barrel on a
700P. He used a "barrel inletting tool". For lack of a better term, an
elongated cheese grater.:D To my eye looks completely symmetrical.

I think Brownell's stocks these tools.

Tod,

I know McMillans does not recommend any of the big boomers in anything but their heavy fill stocks. None of my business, but he might want to make sure it isn't a lightweight fill if he hasn't checked. Apparently the heavy fill is sometimes called Sniper Fill as well. Likely needs a bedding block setup for a 416 as well. Don't blame you for passing this to a smith.

Tod What is the model of the stock, as some have posted there are some that have a ballon glass filler in them, if it is any of the A or M series stock this is not the case, but many of the hunter style stock are filled for lightness.
I do alot of work on McMillans every day so if I can be of any help let me know.

Tod It is early in the morning so maybe I am not fully awake, but I am confused here so want to clarify.
The stock is a McMillan that is inletted for Rem 700 LA and the action is 700LA, the stock has the Sako stock shape to it? And all you need done is to have the barrel channel opened up then bed the barrelled action. Right??

We can do it
