I was thinking of purchasing a Ruger GP100, but before I went all the way I was wondering if anyone has any input(good or bad) about these revolvers. Your honesty would be appreciated.

Maurice bought one PM him

I bought a police six 357 from a buddy dirt cheap. The police/security/service six was the predessor of the GP. However I am pretty sure that not much has changed. My gun is built like a tank, reliable and accurate with an awful trigger. I was to at the range this week, beautiful day 3 degrees, hands only slightly shaking. I was able to do this group at 15 yards off of the bench.

The trigger is awful. From what I have gleaned from the internet. Ruger casts all of its parts. They are incredibly strong but not well polished.

What I did to improve mine was buy a set of snap caps and dryfired it a couple thousand times. I am not sure if this improved the trigger or because the exercise developed my finger to the size of my bicep, but it seems to be quite a bit better.

Maurice just bought one and I believe he did a trigger job on it so his input would be more valuable than mine.

I had a Gp100 and loved it. So what if the trigger needed a little getting used to. The thing was built like a tank and precise as hell. The only reason I sold it was because i needed money for another project.

Its a fantastic gun. The trigger is not as smooth as a SW out of the box but it is fine. I have had mine for over 20yrs and it has functioned perfectly, whereas the S&W has had some minor adjustments. You will get lots of opinions and folks saying that S&W is better but that is opinion only. If you want a strong, reliable. accurate and durable gun you wont go wrong with a GP100.
Cheers:)

I had the GP100 in 357 mag as my duty weapon for about 3 years and i totally agree with Safeguardguy, you can beat the s**t out of anything with that gun. You can eve use it as a hammer if you need one!!!:bangHead: Seriously, it is a perfect COMBAT revolver. As for precision, i did a bit of PPC with it and it wasn't too bad. Very very rugged hangun. Especially in S/S.

it's the one gun that I always want to kick my a** for getting rid of ,traded it for 2 paintball gun kits,my kid wanted to try paintball,I love my kid but man was that ever a stupid move, good thing I have lots of other guns to play with!

Gp-100

Good wheelgun... while I'd still rather have a S&W 19/66 +/or 586/686 series, I wouldn't feel let out owning a Ruger GP-100. Ruger makes nice wheelguns... ;)

Llke all guns, not one is perfect, but if your considering a GP, you won't make a mistake. I have had a few in my time, and not one had been inaccurate. The grips are perfect , the front sight can be changed easily, and like many previous responses, they are very strong. In general, the triggers are not as smooth as the Smiths, but once in a while you will find an out of the box Ruger with a better trigger. Goodluck

Too replace the front sight with a Fibre Optic unit, is was about 30 seconds. The springs I replaced with lighter, (although not the lightest) hammer and trigger return spring. The strut needs a serious polishing especially where the hammer spring contacts and the hammer rides over it. It is built like a truck! If you run out of ammo, you can smash the targets. I did a slight chamfer job on the cylinders. Like Jason says, needs some dryfiring and proper lubrication. I have been eyeing something else recently, so I have been hesitant about keeping it.

I have the s/s, 6" model.....absolutely love it! It is my first and only revolver but love the fact I can shoot 38 spl ...and 357 magnum....highly recommend this gun, it is cheaper than a S&W but hey....also, if you buy it, let me know, I have a fantastic PDF I can email you about maintaining the gun.

Shooting Times did a 10,000 round test on the GP100. The article is reprinted in the "Rugers Collector " editions I bough last week. The article gives you an in depth review of the GP100.

I test fired a friends GP100 this summer and I liked it, so I'm seriously considering purchasing the stainless model.

I would buy a new Ruger GP100 over the new S&W's but I still prefer the older S&W guns if you can find a good one. If not, get the GP100 or a Security Six. The trigger is easily improved by polishing the internal parts and changing to lighter springs.

Proper lube and lots of dry firing results in a much improved trigger, they come pretty rough out of the box. I put springs in mine too. Accuracy is outstanding without any tweaks. Factory sights are good, as is the grip. Buying one is a no-brainer. If I had a dollar for every shooter that's said, "...never should have sold/traded it... I'd have a shiney new Duramax in the driveway. GET ONE!
