I'm looking to shorten the barrel on my sporter no1, and someone suggested a no4 front sight might fit on the shortened barrel. So I need to figure out the inside diameter of the sight band to see if it's workable or not.

So, does anyone know what it is? Anyone got one in a parts bin they can measure? Or can someone measure the barrel thickness of your no4 right behind/infront of the sight?

Thanks!

With my caliper, the inside diameter of a front sight base I have in my parts bin is 0.6 inch, plus or minus 0.001

The "band" is a term typically used to describe the part that keeps the handguards in place on top of the barrel and resting on the sides of the forend.

...i'll be interested in what you find...shortened my no.1 sporter to 20" and used its front sight...but it is paper thin and it'd be nice to find out about the no.4 if it is beefier...

They fit. I chopped some back in the 90's and used the No4 front site assy. Original pin then soft soldered on,just to be sure

Keep in mind that the No. 4 front sight base is machined to accept the lugs on the barrel. You won't have a 100% contact.
