If it weren't for mistakes, we'd never learn anything! They advertise it as a "free floating" hand guard, but it actually uses the standard nut, as opposed to the "free float" one, as terBC pointed out.
 
The hand guard should have come with its own barrel nut. I think these are not sold separately unless its a snap on type of hand guard.

You mentioned buying a piston kit. IIRC these will install in the standard rail/barrel nut....anything proprietary tend not to fit well. Check with the piston kit info for what type of hand guard/ barrel nut that works.

One last advice. Get the right set of tools for your build/install.

The troy handguards don't come with a barrel nut you have to supply your own, fortunately they're a standard barrel nut and not proprietary to the handguard which is why I think they don't include them.
