Install Sling Swivels on a pre-64 Win 94?

I like to have the option of slinging a gun when I'm walking - if something doesn't have swivels when I buy it then I put them on. BUT... I'm looking at a Win 94 (made in 1957) that I just bought and debating about tapping the stock to install a sling swivel. I see that many of the Marlin lever actions come with factory swivels, the Winchesters still tend not too.

- Is a sling a PITA on a Lever Action rifle? (never had a lever action before - wondering if it will interfere with the action)

- Should I be taken out and shot for installing swivels on a pre-64 30-30? (it's for shooting, not 'collecting', but still...)

Thanks for your thoughts -

Unless it's a like new pre-64, then it's not rare enough to worry about.
If the sling is installed in the correct position it does not hinder the action.

Use the type that clamp around the magazine tube if you must have a sling. It's the strongest system I've seen. Must '94 users eventually find that the rifle is encubered by the sling, and take them off anyway.

Thanks - sounds like I shouldn't worry about decreasing the resale value (good) and as I suspected, the sling may be an encumberment so my plan was to use 'quick-release' swivels and just take the sling off after I've hiked into my location (bit of a pain but a trade off for the convenience of carrying it slung for a few clicks). I've got the magazine tube type. Thanks for the comments.

I recently installed Uncle Mike's quick-detach sling swivels on my Marlin 1894. The stock already had a counter-sunk predrilled hole. plugged with a plastic slug, from the factory, I assume. The fore-end swivel is a ring that goes around the magazine tube. Just make sure you tighted the hell out of the screw on the fore swivel ring. When I shot the rifle the first time after installing the swivels, the ring was walking forward on the tube with each shot.:)
The rifle balances well with a sling and does not interfere with operation of the rifle.

Seriously Consider this:

:)

Edited to add: I've got the Uncle Mikes Swivel set-up on mine, Barrel Mag clamp etc, with a simple leather Sling. Works fine, and is a very nice rifle to pack around in the Bush. :D

If they're installed correctly I don't think value would suffer much if at all. But they carry real nice with one hand without a sling. I have a couple old Marlins without swivels or studs and I'm in no hurry to install any...
