Installing a Scope

I was curious how hard it will be to install and setup a scope. When I looked online, there were a variety of tools to align the rings. I was wondering if you need these tools. My 10/22 came with the scope installed, but I have just ordered an extractor, auto bolt release and a mag release extension. So I will be disassembling the rifle here shortly. I guess the first question is do I even need to remove the scope and rings to replace the listed items? If so, then do I need these special tools??

Cheers
Andrew

You don't need to remove the scope to fully break down the rifle because it's attached to the receiver. You can strip everything off including the barrel and you can still leave the scope mounted. And no, you don't need any special tools to replace any of those items.

I would dismount the scope before working on the rifle just for convenience and to avoid accidentally bumping or scratching it. Just loosen the bolts holding the rings to the mounting rail. You don't need to take the scope out of the rings.

When you're done with the work, put the scope/rings back on. No special alignment tools are necessary. If you remount the rings in the same rail slots the zero of the scope should be the same. Take a few shots at the range just to be sure and adjust the scope windage/elevation dials if necessary.

All I need to do is remove the screw in front of the magazine and the barrel ring, and it comes apart, correct?

First you remove the stock. Then there will be some dowel pins exposed on the side of the reciever. They are not in that tight. Push out the small ones with a screwdriver or whatever. The trigger group should now lift out. Now push out the large dowel pin and pull the action all the way back using the charging handle like normal. Reach in with your free hand and lift out the bolt. Now you can take out the recoil spring/charging handle assy. Easy as that.
