How would one go about installing the ball detent in a remington 870 barrel that does not have one? In theory drill the hole, install spring and ball, stake it in there. Has anyone done this? Do you just order the spring and ball from an 870 wingmaster? Any help from someone who has done this, or installed other ball detents would be appreciated. Thanks

I have done lots of them. Yes drill the hole in the right place to the correct depth, install spring and detent, then stake with detent staking tool.

If you use a sling plate with a ball on a non-detent barrel the ball is not spring loaded, it is just jambed in there. It may work, but it is not the right approach in my opinion.

Arwen Ace has THE way to go, the plate may work good but if you ever remove it, you start back with nothing... do it right, once for all, add the plate after if you whant. Also, you can really trust arwen if you need it to be done, awesone work each and every time i have deal with....

just my opinion

Thanks for the info guys. I would trust Arwen to do it but I fear with shipping and all it would cost more than I paid for the barrel lol. I'll have to look into it.

Arwen could you thread a Norinco barrel for Rem-chokes as well?

Norinco barrels can be threaded for chokes. Most Norinco(870 copies) barrels of what I have seen are pretty thin. I saw one done with a Rem Choke and the metal left was paper thin; too thin for my liking. I do the thinner barrels with Tru Chokes.
