I want to install a flattop on an older Colt Sporter Match H-Bar, with a 5.56 1/7 twist barrel.

The H-Bar has a screw holding the lower and upper together will this cause problems when I go to select an upper?

Is there a difference in the dimensions of an older barrel when I remove the front sight assembly and try to replace it with a gas block for a free floating barrel?

Who makes a quality upper at a reasonable price for this project?

Who also has a good selection of the items required to build the upper?

FYI if your lower uses the large front take down pins then you will need an adapter. I have an extra one if you need just let me know. You may want to consider selling that Colt and purchasing a new one as a decent older HBAR's can sell for close to the price of a new Colt AR flattop..

You will need either a large hole upper to fit the Colt lower , Wolverine Supplies has them listed but out of stock or you can use a front take down pin adapter .

I did similar for a Colt Sporter Target many years ago (before ITAR reclassification of Canada).

Acquired a large-hole flattop upper and a large diameter detented takedown pin.

Knowing what I know now I would probably have been better off selling the Sporter Target
and starting over. The different attributes of the Colt "magic" lower restrict your options
for aftermarket triggers and uppers you can easily use.

What JD spanner said. I had a sporter, I bought the DD big hole flat top upper. The black upper didn't match he green-grey Colt lower, which pissed me off, so I sold both.

PM me if you are interested in trading for one that is a flat top or something different.
I've been looking for an A2 Hbar since the last one I sold...

The DD large hole uppers are discontinued. I tried getting one, even from Wolverine. The only option is the offset pin now, which is also discontinued.

I did the same thing a few years ago (only with an adapter pin) and agree completely that it would've been better to sell it and buy a new one. Resale value for mine would have been higher if I'd left it original, too.
