So the new shotgun I bought, a 6 shot 590a1 the screw holding the safety on is a "security" type, the head is deformed enough that I am unable to get a screw driver to loosen it off....

any suggestion on doing this ??

I'm not sure if you understand the type of screw that's installed in your Mossberg's safety kit, so pardon my assumption, but the screw head is not deformed. It's a special safety button screw Brownells sells with their kits for the 500 and 590s.

You can't remove that safety button screw with a regular slot screwdriver. It slips off. You'll need a special, one way screw bit to remove that screw. I think it's called a Sidewinder screwdriver, or bit.

If you have a new screw with the kit, just tighten the screw that is currently on the gun until it breaks. You can then remove the screw stub easily by hand.

I have a Mossberg, I think you would have to use a sharply pointed prick punch to try to back that little screw off a bit , so u can get in there with a needle nose or another tool to turn it out.

Anyone know Why Mossberg did this kinda stupid thing.?

I cut a notch in mine with a dremel to accept a flat bladed screwdriver, rather than the tamper proof. This destroys the original safety switch, though.

Oh, and don't lose the detent ball.

"Security" meaning they machine the slotted screw cap so there no flat surface on which a bit can torque against when trying to unscrew it.

I replaced both the factory safeties on my 930 and my 590, what worked for me was finding a slot bit that just fits in the groove. Make sure the receiver is clamped down or secured somewhere.

Place the screwdriver/bit inside and while pressing straight down, slowly, but surely, unscrew the uh... Screw :)

It must be deliberate and care must be taken, but this will work. Even if the bit slips out of the groove into the machined "security" part of the screw cap, your direct downward pressure will keep the bit from slipping off.

It helps alot to have a multi bit driver with a large grippy handle.

Good luck, these things are so worth it :)
