Anyone have experience insuring big game trophiies?? I have Stone sheep shoulder mounts I'd like to insure. Replacing these would be difficult to impossible. Too old to do it on my own over again. Current cost for a guided Stone hunt is now $100,000 U.S. or more.

I am only spit balling here, but have you tried Safari Club International ??
How about your own home insurance company ?
Maybe some of the other guys here big game guides and other members who have done safaris in Africa.
I understand you are reaching out here, but some of the success stories of the members might be worthy of dropping a pm and asking for some guidance (no pun intended).

What I was hoping for is information from someone who has actually done this. How does one establish the replacement value of a trophy mount to the satisfaction of the insurance company. I am pretty sure most insurance brokers and adjusters have no idea of the costs of a big game hunt.

SCI had an insurance deal for trophies, .....values are based on replacement hunt costs, taxidermy, and transportation costs to the local.
I did have a fire and based some losses on the above. Since then I've done a few appraisals but one has to remember they don't cover the cost to replace a #2 B&C head, just a replacement animal if you're lucky.

your broker will have all the answers second hand info really invalid

I have a few trophies, but never did I ever entertain the thought of insuring them. If it was "the" world, country or provincial record, I might do so. However, all my firearms are 100% insured, got that covered.

Track, from the photos you have contributed over time, you have some very nice specimens...dont undervalue them.
I have been offered 10 grand each for 200" WT's and a buddy of mine was offered 25 g's for a B H rams head his father had killed 20 yrs ago (just a good head ,nothing spectacular)....they do have value.

I do agree with you tho that the value for us is the memories but after were gone their just a head on the wall so they may as well turn them into cash if they want.

Most if not all homeowners insurance policies will only cover the cost of taxidermy and that's only if you have a special rider for said items.

SCI used to offer insurance for the cost of the actual hunt and taxidermy. Likely this means they would cover the cost of another hunt or a portion of it, not just flat out pay cash for the loss. I'm not sure if they still offer it.

Your possibly correct, maybe I should contact my home insurance company. Of the big game animals I diplayed, it was only a few which my son and I have killed. As usual, I'm pumped again for the hunting season, although it's still far away. We didn't get big boy last year, but we know his whereabouts, he'll be bigger this year. ;)

When i got my tenant insurance they were basically like "how much $$$ you want covered?" All they cared about was the bottom line, how I determined what my stuff was worth didn't matter all that mattered was how much my premium was gonna be, all based on how much $$ I'm claiming my #### is worth.

This was for total loss coverage in case of a fire etc.

I got out of bed every morning of hunting season for 35 yrs with the expectation I was going to find the world record buck that day....never did but i tried hard & seen some very nice heads but "not the one".
I killed 2 over 200 and seen prob 1/2 dozen more in that league, one in particular, a perfect typical 5 x 5 WT that was at least 32' wide and 12" 2's and 3's...broad side at 125 yrds but I could see my neighbor feeding stock with his tractor in the same scope picture as the buck...no shot.

Yup, I know what you're talking about. The buck which we were hunting last year has main beams that reach to the sky, accompanied by 4 other long points. Would estimate him at 184 typical. This year we are changing tactics and hopefully kill him ...........he is a very smart buck. Both my son and I love heavy beam buck and they are around to be found.
