Guess?
If I line up my rail properly, with the middle hole over the sear pin, and the vertical slot sitting over the other pin, the first character of my serial number will be damaged when I drill the front hole. I am pretty sure that damaging the serial is not a good thing. I have played with alignment as much as I can, but in order to make it fit, the first character in my serial will be damaged.

Here are some pics.

Are the 858s stamped differently, or am I missing something?

To avoid damaging the serial number, the new front hole can be drilled and tapped in the rail. Just make sure it will be in usable position to the receiver.

I am going to play with it some more. I hope to have a smith do the work, so perhaps he can figure it out if I cannot.
