Can a SKS be easily converted to another caliber?
A fellow I was speaking with on the weekend said other caliber barrels are available. This was news to me but then I don't know a lot about the SKS.
Also there is more to a caliber change than the barrel.
He claimed the "civilian ammo" was pricy.
I'm wondering if what he call an SKS is the same as the commie SKS I'm thinking about

No conversion kit or interchangeable barrel are available for the sks. Beside the barrel, new bolt would be needed and probably magazine change as well. SKS barrel are threaded or pressed in receiver, another feature that wouldn't make thing easy.

The only "commie" carbine I can think of that is "sks" like would be the vz52 in 7.62x45 that can have an insert installed for 7.62x39 and has a variant, the vz52/57 that was made for 7.62x39 off the start.

A shooting buddy of mine has an SKS that he re-barreled to .22x39mm at home. He also re-barreled a 7.62 VZ to .223 so he's got some skills.

There are a few Norinco SKSs out there factory chambered in 5.56x45mm. I've never seen one in person but occasional pictures float around the web...

Custom conversions exist too. This one is rather remarkable:
