Hello, I am in the process of purchasing an intro level .22LR target rifle and would like to explore options for competitive small bore shooting in the Ottawa area. Maybe LSBA? Maybe something else?

Can anyone make any recommendations.

Are there any smallbore competition books/manuals I can read that will help?

thank you

Hi Water witch.

The main competitions for smallbore would be 3p type shooting which includes mainly sporting rifle and match rifle (there are also others such as hunter or hunting rifle - I forget what exactly it is called and also a couple of other small ones).

For sporting rifle basically you shoot a gun that weighs under 4kg and has a trigger pull of 1000g or under. There are of course, many other rules but these are probably the two most important. The most common rifles for this event would be the CIL 190's, the anshchutz 1403's, match 64's and other guns like that.

For match rifle the gun is basically unlimited (gun can weight up to 8kg I believe) and there is no limit on trigger. A lot of people have the aluminium anschutz, feinwerkbau's and walthers for this event. This would be the more expensive class to shoot in - mainly because of the cost of gun.

http://www.sfc-ftc.ca-documents-2005_ISSF_Rules1.pdf - those are the rules for match rifle I believe.

See if there are any 3p type practices or coaches in the area and see if they can help you as well.

Water witch,

The LSBA would be your best bet, they also run a series of indoor match in the winter time!

If your looking for some target shooting related website, these two are the best.

Welcome to the sport :)

Water Witch,

If you’re interested in the LSBA and competitive smallbore shooting than you should check out the RA Gun Club in Ottawa. We officially hold the LSBA competitions. A number of our members are serious competitors. One of our members won the Ontario Provincial this year and another member has been on the Canadian National team for ISSF for a number of years. You don’t have to be a member of the club to participate in the LSBA. However, if you are serious about smallbore I strongly suggest you check us out since we are the only indoor range in Ottawa. So you can shoot year round. We offer smallbore shooting in the silhouette, hunting, sporting and ISSF events. As well as, air rifle.

The timing is right for you to check us out. Our open house is this Sunday, June 9th. The handgun section is from 9 – 12 and the rifle section is from 1-4. I’ll be there volunteering so come by and say hello.

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to come to the open house on Sunday afternoon. Shoot me a PM with your particuliars and I'll be sure to introduce myself when I see you. :)
