Hey guys,

I'm very new to surfing the Service Rifle forum, but after bunch of reading I cant help but be drawn toward the CQB matches I have read about..

Just interested for more information rgarding these matches and where they take place. From my understanding it seems most take place at CFB Borden if I'm not mistake, sadly roughly 2 and a half hours away (I'm a member at Silverdale Gun Club in St. Anns).

Any info on southern Ontario matches? Saw Guelph hosted one, is this going to be a more regular event? (only 1 hour and a half away and I have lots of family in that area so would be better then CFB for me).

I'd also like to that Hungry for your post 'ORA's CQB Matches - Getting Ready...' I found this very helpful and answered most of my questions right away regarding gear needed!

Anyway just looking for any information regarding these style of matches, looks very interesting and super fun!

Thank you all,

Nick

I come from London, 3 hours to get from Borden to home. I stay over night before at my son's. The Guelph event went very well. Crumlins is also interested in hosting CQB. Unfortunately we have to wait the winter, definitely will go through CQB withdrawals...

I will try to put on a few matches at Guelph again next year. Our first match went very well.
Borden is worth the drive, if its a hassle to get up early stay in Angus and roll outta bed 20 minutes before sign in. Find a pal and split the cost on a room. Or carpool a bunch of us do that too.

Winter withdrawals, eh?

Here's a coaching suggestion fer ya CQB'ers who are hibernating this winter.... If you got a smartphone (tactical teacher hat on now), head over to the "App Store" for you Iphone dudes and I'm not certain which Android App it's gonna be, but search and (hopefully FREE) download a Shot Timer App. I'm using the Surefire version right now.

I set up the Random Timer and hit the START button for a beep to begin my draw, rack and 'dry fire' my pistol. Monitor you results and set goals for a faster draw. Build in muscle memory over the winter. You will be surprised how quickly you will improve on yer draw!

Cheers and keep helping the CQB noobs around here!

So that is possible even with an ATT to spend the night somewhere nearby?

Because going to Guelph is still a distance away but I have an Uncle who would gladly let me stay for the night, so this would be an ideal situation instead of the drive to Borden(dont have any friends who would be interested so can't split cost of gas).

Also do the CQB matches require a TDSA Holster Qualification or Black Badge of some sort to holster a sidearm? I'll have my TDSA by then hopefully anyway, just curious.

Damn tiriaq, we were going to tell him he has to put up a tent at the range. LOL.

Yeah, the CFO has an understanding that you can stay over night on a trip to a range facility. I've traveled on NB with restricteds no problem.

how about a weekend?

And hey I got a massive tent and a decent barbecue.. anyone want to camp out with me at the range let me know ;)

Well i'll for sure keep my eye open, would love to try this event at Guelph next year!

By the way Bolivar, love your youtube videos! Found them very helpful, especially showing the gear you use!

But....because of some CFO foolishness, in Ontario, you will also need an invitation from the hosting Club or Range. The match announcement should suffice.

From what I have seen so far.. my club at least (Silverdale) just has an invitation that guests can print off and fill in the blanks so anyone can easily do it, so shouldn't be a problem

Thanks for the help so far guys!7

gonna keep researching this and gear options, i'll probably be running a vest-less setup just off of my CR Speed belt. i'm sure i'll be back for more questions ;)

There are advantages to keeping the rig simple. I use a pistol holster and a 2 mag pistol holster.

For the rifle mags I wear a bib that hold 3 mags.

The 4 round rifle mag goes in my back pocket until needed. It is not loaded against the clock, so it does not have to be handy.

I found things got faster and easier by doubling up 4 rifle mags. Most events are faster with a double mag. Just switch it over.

Actually I was doing that last year. Get all geared up in the living room, TV on, practicing changing mags, draw pistol, etc. You'd laugh yourselves silly at the expression the wife gives me when I do that. She usually leaves the room saying "make sure you keep the damn drapes closed, I dont want any cops coming to the door."

I live all the way out in Whitby and it takes about 2.5 hours (following the rules of the road) to drive to Borden. Honestly, it's worth the drive. CQB Matches are a blast even if you don't score high.

As far as kit goes. Keep it simple. My first match I only ran my war belt. Over time I got bored of it and changed #### around, now I run my war belt and a plate carrier. Try gear on, see where it rubs/catches against other ####, re-arrange it, run dry drills, get used to everything before you compete with it. My girlfriend used to give me weird looks whenever i'd run around the house all kitted up, now she just knows i'm gettin' ready for a match, lol.

I can't go back to bench shooting after this.

I wanted to add that I'm in the same boat as NickVR. I really want to get into CQB but the trip to Borden really throws me off. I work nights and there is no way I am able to make it to Borden by (I think) 8 am. If I made it I would be in no shape to shoot a gun lol.

I'm really hoping Guelph puts on more of these matches in the future. I would come out for sure.
