Interested in getting involved in IPSC

I ran across the IPSC booth at the Vancouver outdoors show 2 years ago. Spoke to the guy at the booth and watched a video demo and thought "I need to try that"... Lack of time prevented me from following up but now I have a little extra time I am interested in action pistol shooting.

I have a question (Lower Mainland specific) and hope the members can help me out.

A few basics I can figure out. I'll need my Restricted, 9mm (or better) pistol, and take the black badge course.

After completing the black badge, is there a range in the Lower Mainland to practice? I am sure static shooting helps but I'm sure there is more involved when doing "run and gun" that need to be practiced.

For the restricted you need to be a member of a gun club. Can you join IPSC then write the restricted or do you need to be a member of a scondary gun club/range.

Thanks

Well, having a restricted firearm helps you take the course. There are some BB instructors that will rent/sell you gear/ammo, but it's more the exception, not the rule.

There are 3 Lower mainland clubs that will let you practice IPSC, sort of.

PCDHFC does, once you take their range users course.
TMSA does, once you get your Black Badge there is a separate Black Badge only pad for practicing those skills.
Abbotsford has their Skills and Drills night, but it's more organized and I'm not sure what they do there.

I do most of my static practice at DVC Indoor Range, because I hates getting cold in the winter and wet in the spring/fall. I would do better if I practiced more, I suppose, but my work schedule prevents me from getting a lot of practice done until the summer.

I highly recommend Abbotsford, Slavex-don't let the teeth put you off- runs the skills and drills and is an exceptional instructor. If my job did not involve working nights i would be going to Abbotsford every chance i could get.

Does anyone know of anywhere in the GTA one could find out more about IPSC and the black badge? I see a lot of clubs are talking about CDP but I don't see any IPSC. Are they related or anything? Forgive me if these are stupid questions but I am new to handguns.

Come up to Sharon and we can break it down for you.

Andre66,

Is Slavex the instructor's forum nickname or is it the guy's last name? If I head to the range and ask for Mr. Slavex are they going to say "Sure, let me get his contact info" or are they going to look at me like I'm a 'tard?

Having a top notch instructor + a practice range in my back yard is awesome! I'm pretty excited about this.

Anyone have a suggestion for an inexpensive 9mm starter pistol?

Just ask for fang...

My general suggestion: Buy whichever service-sized 9mm you like that fits your hand, that you can find a half-dozen extra factory magazines for within ten minutes of googling, and that has a ready selection of IPSC-suitable Kydex holsters and magazine pouches available for it.

Getting specific, my knee would jerk in the direction of a secondhand HK plastic-framed nine. The mall ninja market has ensured that there are a lot of holsters and pouches on offer for USPs, for example, and the design's been proven. Same applies to Glocks, only moreso, and I think they're a bit cheaper, used.

It is his forum nickname, just shoot him a PM here and he can let you know what you need for skills and drills night.

Last night would've been a good night to come out. Only 4 people.
We do fundamentals first and foremost and then depending on the group we'll do more advanced skills, shooting and moving, multiple target engagement, etc.
New shooters are always welcome. My real name is Rob, but I respond equally well to Fang, Slavex, moron etc. Email me rob@activeshooter for more info. We are out again next friday at 7pm

Silvercore runs courses on a regular basis out of Abbotsford, Delta, Maple Ridge, and Vancouver. Our next Abbotsford course will be held this weekend (December 19/20).
