I was born with a blind right eye, and I am wondering if that is a problem aiming with a rifle. Whenever I do get my PAL (busy with school/work), I am thinking of getting a Mauser rifle. Is it possible to hold a rifle right handed and aim with the left eye? What about left handed shooting? I am currently a noob with firearms.

are you naturally right handed?
i used to shoot with a guy that was blinded in farm accident and he learned to shoot left handed
i have seen an off set sight to compensate for the one blind eye but still think learning to shoot left handed would work for situations outside of fixed distance ranges

If the scope is mounted high I often look through the opposite eye. You can learn to shoot left handed. I have never shot a mauser with the wrong eye with iron sights, no doubt somebody has.

it may be a bit difficult with iron sites to shoot right hand with left eye, simplye due to craneing and cranking ur neck to get the sights lined up. a rifle with scope thats mounted high would be fine. and hand gun is not a proplem at all.

learning to shoot left handed really isnt that hard, "weak side" of your body (any ones) tends to have problems with fine motor skillz, but since the only fine motor movement is the trigger finger, its easy to learn!

on this page at the top, there is stickies for all the provences, maybe post in there and let every one know whats up and im sure some one will chirp up thats willing to have you as a guest so you can experiance first hand what will and wont work for you.

happy shooting!

We'll do you know for sure which hand you shoot with because I'm left handed for everything with the exception of shooting.

Have yet to fire a firearm (as I said, total noob), so not sure which I am proficient in. Donny, yea I am right handed. I guess I will have to train myself left handed, unless I use a raise scope or something. Thanks for the info!

Ioncannon, I think you will have no problem shooting left handed. I'm primarily left handed, so as a child I began shooting left handed, doing not bad. Then during an eye exam I asked the eye doctor which eye is my dominant one, since doing the standard tests myself yielded no conclusive result. The doc said I was right eye dominant, so I switched to shooting righty, with positive results. Since then my vision has changed again, my right eye being dominant at closer distances, my left eye at further ones. I just shoot right handed for everything, but sometimes I shoot lefty just for something to do.

I'm cross dominant (right handed but left eye dominant) and have to shoot left handed.
If you don't have previous firearms experience thats fine, its easier to learn to shoot left handed then switch off half-way through your life. The downside is that you either pony up a few extra bucks for a neutral or left handed bolt action rifle or learn to comfortably shoot a rifle that favors right-handed shooters, the upside is that you get reeeeaaaaallllyyy good at reaching over the rifle to manipulate the bolt.
Hope this helps!

Same situation I am In. Never had a problem shooting leftie, except convincing my dad that i wasent holding the gun wrong when i was a kid. I always shot a right hand 22 leftie, waent too bad but i would buy a left hand gun if i were you. Or a semi auto, maybe a lever action.

Know just what you mean, had my dad standing there scratching his chin and continuously walking towards me as if to stop me then changing his mind and standing back, just shaking his head and muttering something about 'not how he did it.'

if you shoot a right handed rifle with a scope , you could get offset mounts that move the scope to the left of the barrel centre .

like others have mentioned , what about using a left handed rifle ?

it may be awkward at first , but it just a matter of practice ..... lots of left handed people have been forced to write right handed ......

I'm not sure if they're offered by the major companies, but if you're buying a older used rifle you could look for one with a neutral stock. Still a right hand bolt, but its not really a big deal. I shoot with an old neutral stocked anschutz rifle and its not hard at all.
Really though, left handed is probably your best bet.

I persoanlly know a fine gentleman who was born left handed and left eye dominant: he learned to shoot when left handed rifles were custom only. He now can shoot either hand, either eye (left hand left eye OR right hand right eye).

I think you will be able to learn something that will work for you.
