Quite the contrary, another contact point with the rifle helps immensely. One should be able to shoot offhand without it but it can be an invaluable shooting aid. As far as doubting the utility you just have to go watch any service rifle or other discipline that allows slings to be used. Using a well fitted sling is almost like cheating. Your right most won’t see or hear of them being used this way and I think that points to a general lack of training, in general firearms community is so ignorant to basic firearms function and theory it’s starling, most grow up learning to shoot from dad or grandpa and get no formal training of any kind, not that that’s a bad thing but many are lacking in very basic fundamentals. Take a trip to a range around hunting season and look at old targets, it can be a startling reminder of this. As far as offhand shooting plateauing I agree that rimfire and dry fire practice are invaluable, as long as it’s purposeful practice. Perfect practice makes perfect.I practice offhand a lot, although I don't really seem to improve at it. I doubt the utility of slings, I have never seen or heard of anyone using one while hunting, and they probably take away from the real practice of offhand that you should be doing
