Hey guys,

Maybe someone who is more rehearsed in Japanese Ammunition can help me out here.

My grandfather called me up the other day and said,

"Young man, can you come over. Someone give me some bullets they say are for Chinese rifle."

So I went over and lo and behold I was presented with 2 15 round boxes and 9 rounds on stripper clips.

A little background, my grandparents are Chinese and these rounds were given to them by a friend who's father just passed away. He found the rounds and gave them to my grandfather because he didn't want nor need them and he figured since the characters on the box were of an Asian language that my grandparents were the proper candidates to receive them.

My grandmother could only properly translate one part of the writing to english which she said read "Type Three Eight"

I put two and two together and figured out they were 6.5x50SR cartridges or 6.5 Jap/Arisaka which was also hinted towards due to the Mauser style stripper clips and the semi-rim. I verified this by checking the bullet size as well.

The only thing I could figure out is that these are likely original Japanese Rounds due to the headstamp style (no markings and three primer crimps). I found this info on what seems is the only website that provided a little information, reference and pictures.

I told my grandfather of what I believe are the origins of this ammo and he was very interested. He himself lived under Japanese occupation during WWII then made his way to Canada after the war. He was taken by the fact that this is a calibre of ammunition he had fired at him before lol.

Here are pictures of the boxes and the ammo.

Any and all information is appreciated! These rounds are a great addition to my slow but growing cartridge collection.

This matches what I have seen.

I picked up some 6.5 Japanese at a show that still appeared to be original that looked just like the ones you pictured. There doesn't seem to be any writing on the bottom of the rounds, just the crimp mark.

I hope you have better luck than I did if you decide to shoot it. Only about 50% of mine actually fired.

The rounds in the charger are standard ball ammunition as indicated by the pinkish-red lacquer seal around the case mouth. The circled "G" marking on the box indicates that ammunition from that box would have been loaded with a reduced charge for use primarily in machine guns. The boxes in particular are a very nice addition to your collection and appear to be in very nice condition.Personally I would consider these as collector's rounds and not attempt to shoot them.

No shooting of this stuff due to lack of Type 38 and the fact that I figured these are very collectible. I am leaving the two boxes of them sealed.

Thanks guys!

I think that is a very wise move on your part, those boxes are uncommon to say the least in my experience anyway, and are highly sought after.Japanese rifles pop up on occasion for sale here on the EE and if you happen to snag one there is commercial ammo available from a number of sources to feed it.Again, great score on what you have there.

That box is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. As that generation dies off I fear more and more of that stuff simply gets tossed by uninformed family members, or sold at a garage sale to Bubba.
